how do I access iPad Safari tabs without scrolling or pinching?

iPad 2 ios 8.1. The 8.1 updated Safari for iPad hides the tabs once the user scrolls downwards. The only way to then access the tabs is to either scroll upwards, or 'pinch' the screen. The first option is not workable for those of us who need to keep our exact place on the page (for example, when reading long articles). The second is inefficient and visually jarring. Is there a way to access the tabs efficiently without scrolling or pinching? The old Safari simply left the tabs visible at all times. This was perfect. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
