There is a Charger Board, and a DC-in Board, plus some other bits that may be reason
behind what you've seen going on in the computer. So I suggest there is a hardware
cause of the symptom. Unless a simple 'power management unit' reset may help...

to reset the PMU in the early model (two versions, including FireWire) are similar...
In order to address hardware failures, you'd have to check with vintage repair specialists
and the limits on parts availability for these may also limit repairs in regard to replacement.
