Q: 10.6.8 Server/10.9.X Clients: Network Users Unavailable & Remote Home Folder

Hey guys,

I have the following issue. I recently inherited a Mac cluster and it has an old OS X  Server running 10.6.8, which I haven't dared to upgrade yet, with 25 clients. All clients so far seem to run using OS X 10.6.8 to 10.8.2. The server functions as our remote home server, DHCP, Open Directory, AFP, SMB.

Recently I was asked to hook up an iMac to the network, it's running 10.9.5.

I added it in the DHCP settings and the DHCP and also enabled network user logins, but it seems to not work correctly in a rather peculiar way. After restarting the Mavericks client I get a "Network Users Unavailable" error at the login screen but I CAN actually login with a network user account. Problem now is that the home folder is not mounted correctly. I can mount it manually as administrator but it doesn't seem to work during the network user login.

Do you guys have any idea how to remedy this?

Quick addition, because I can't edit the OP:

If it's not possible to bind Mavericks clients to a a Snow Leopard server, then is there a way to install an older version of OS X on the Mavericks machine? I tried to install Snow Leopard using a DVD but to no avail.
