Hi Theredbar,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

If you have an already existing Apple ID and are trying to make a purchase, whether it's free or paid, you will be prompted to enter a payment source for your Apple ID. If you do not want a payment source on your Apple ID, you can remove it at a later time.

If you're using the iTunes Store or App Store for the first time

If you're using the store for the first time with an existing Apple ID, you must provide a payment method. After you create the account, you can change your payment information to None.

Why can’t I select None when I edit my Apple ID payment information? - Apple Support

Take care,

Alex H.
