iMessage has split one contact into two

I was receiving text this morning from my friend and they were just being added to our previous conversation but this afternoon my iPhone 4s has decided to create another conversation for the same person so it looks like I am texting two people with the same name. My friend hasn't sent a their message from another other device, it's still their iphone5 on iMessage. My phone hasn't created an additional contact anywhere else for my friend!

Just to note I updated to iOS 8.1.1

please help

I see similar happen with my wife from time to time. She and I both had iPhone 5 phones before we both upgraded to iPhone 6's. This has happened to us using the iPhone 5's under iOS 7, and now with the iPhone 6's using iOS 8.1. About the only thing that I can see that changes is that her phone seems to drop from wifi to cellular data much more frequently than mine does.

The other thing that I can say is that this seems to be happening much less now that she has changed jobs and has not connected to her new employers wifi network yet. At her last job, she would connect to their "guest network" and the it wold switch between the 2 conversations more frequently.
