Ok....now that the wife has lost her iPhone 4s, we are looking at buying a couple of iPhone 6's.
Is 20GB of data enough for general usage? By that I mean occasional YouTube streaming, loads of FB trolling, emails (roughly 20-50 received and sent per day). We don't stream long movies or download loads of music.
Is 20GB overkill?

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to sit and wait for my wife while she was at a dog show. Over the 2 days we were there, I watched about 1-1.5 hours of YouTube music videos, I read probably 30-40 emails and I downloaded about 35-40 1MB files into an app on my iPhone. That accumulated about 2.0-2.5GB of my cellular data. You can base your monthly usage on How you think you'll go compared to my usage. BTW, my usage was all on cellular data because we were at a county fairgrounds for the dog show, but at least I had decent LTE signal while there.
If you utilize wifi for when you would use large chunks of data, 20GB will go along way. If you end up streaming (radio app, etc) a lot, you can blow through quite a bit of data in a short amount of time. You can always up your data package too, depending on the carrier. Some will let you increase your allotted data before the end of a billing period instead of paying overage fees per GB.
I am also wondering about this information. I got a message on my phone that I do not have enough storage and need to up it. I went thru my apps and deleted what I wasn't using and put others on to my reading list. As far as having to pay a monthly fee (I am guessing it's so I may store photos and videos in the cloud) is the 20 GB necessary (unfortunately, it's the least expensive option offered right thru my settings)?

That's all very personal, depending on how you use it, how often you have WiFi available, etc. Ive never gone over 1 GB (and I have a grandfathered unlimited plan) and average about 500 MB/month.
From my experience, 30 min of youtube is about 300-400 mb and, by far, takes way more data than facebook or emails would. I would recommend using WiFi whenever you youtube.
That is not what this discussion was referring to at all. It was referring to mobile data, not online storage.
