A 2010 IMac can take a total of 16 GBs of RAM if it is only an DuoCore i3 CPU model.
If the 2010 IMac model is a Quad Core i5 or i7 CPU, the the Max RAM is 32 GBs.
A 2008 iMac can take a total of 6 GBs of RAMS max.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Good Luck!
There is a great app for questions like this with pointers to add memory and just about any spec on all Apple stuff old, new... - Mactracker.
I believe I got a copy from the App Store.
An example for your iMac 8.1, a snippet from the app:
| Built-in Memory | None |
|---|---|
| Maximum Memory | 6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple) |
| Memory Slots | 2 - 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM |

everymac.com is much better than MacTracker
I don't want to hijack the thread, but what makes you say that?
Every Mac is a much more complete and comprehensive database than the MacTracker app or the MacTracker website.
I use the MacTracker app on my iPad and it is NOT complete enough on certain Mac models and it misses out on the different RAM configurations between the 2010 and 2011 I Mac i3, i5, i7 CPU models.
Every Mac does.
