Q: Why does OS X Yosemite not recognize my Kindle Fire HD?

I recently upgraded to the OS X Yosemite on my MacBook Pro 13"  and I love this new operating system. It's so sleek!

However, I noticed that when I connected my Kindle Fire HD through USB connection to my Mac, my Kindle wasn't recognised.

Andriod File Transfer did recognise the Kindle but I cannot transfer any files. Therefore, it is only offering information what I currently have on my Kindle.

I assume this a problem with OS X Yosemite and can anyone offer me any help on this matter?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Does the drive show in Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility?

I am having the same problem with a MBP running 10.10 and a Kindle Voyage. In my case, no, the Kindle does not show up in Disk Utility. It charges, but nothing else.

I discovered that the cable I was using was a charging only cable that came with another device. Changed over to a full cable and it now works. I didn't know I had any of those and will be marking it as such.

Thank you Eric Root for your suggestion. I have looked in Disk Utility and only the Android File Transfer is listed and not my Kindle Fire HD.

    You are welcome.

Have you tried using a different USB port/cable? Restart the Kindle hard drive? Restart the computer?

Thanks Eric Wortman.  I am using a charge only cable from another device and will try to find my Kindle full cable to see if that works!

I am going to use another cable and see if that works. I have turned on and off each device and that hasn't helped either.

WATCH THIS SPACE! I may be back!

Using the original Kindle Fire cable, my Kindle Fire doesn't mount under Yosemite 10.10.1 and it doesn't show in Disk Utility or anything else, it just does not work. Of course it's worth checking cables and ports, and also restarting both devices, all of which I've done, but it's difficult not to believe that this is simply a BUG.

C'mon Apple, please fix this so we can go on using our Kindles as we want and expect. I had to resort to the 7-year-old iMac I'm in the process of giving away in order to do something really simple, like download an ebook. This doesn't seem good enough.

OK, apologies, the answer is simple, but easily forgotten because it's so long since I had to do this!  Just go to https://www.android.com/filetransfer/ and download and run the Android File Transfer utility and your Kindle will appear on your desktop immediately, assuming you are using a suitable cable.

I think this is an issue only because you have to do it once-only, and then everything runs smoothly, which means that you have long enough to forget it between whenever you update your OS.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I'd rather get on with using my Mac than fiddle with my OS, so this was an unexpected hurdle. Hope this helps somebody other than me!

This is not actually a remedy, however, the Kindle app can be installed and synched on nearly every device available. I own a Fire and a Fire HD, both are too sluggish for me, but I have the Kindle app on my iPad Mini, two Nexus 7s (2012 and 2013 models) and my Note 3 phone.

I also have it installed on my Macbook Pro mid 2012 and my wife has in on her Windows machine.

    Just an idea.

I just got the latest Macbook Pro Retina.  My Kindle does NOT work on this machine, despite following all of the suggestions posted.  Neither device seems to know the other exists

rucsacs, above, has posted a link to the Android File Transfer app. My machine sent me there when I first tried my two Kindles on my Macbook Pro. It works well, unless you have already tried it.

If not, that should be your solution.

Use the charging cord that came with your device, obviously.

Unfortunately, that had no effect.  Odd that this did not happen on my last macbook, with the same operating system
