I have recently bought a philips 4K display (272P4). My macbook pro (early 2011, 2gHz i7 machine with AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256 MB) should be capable to handle the display (according to apple tech specs). However, hdmi via 4k dp to hdmi connector only does 1080p (or i) and display port doesn't function (bought a mini DP to DP cable). Any suggestions on how to fix this?

well that's strange. On support page MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) - Technical Specifications Apple states the following:
Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors
I should be able to get at that level (2560* 1600) or do i misinterpret something?
via the mini Display port to display port cable the mac shows a setting of just that (2560*1600) NTSC, but the display doesnt respond.
via the mini display port to hdmi cable 1080p is the maximum screen resolution.
2560X1600 is not 4K.

hmm yes I see your point thanks for the clarification of 4k/ UHDTV versus WQHD. I should read the definitions manual properly :-)
Still am wondering what to do to mak WQHD work though...

Does the monitor support upscaling? I think most 4K monitors do.
don't know if upscaling is supported. for clarification - the philips is a WQHD screen, so no 4k (as I just learned from you that there is a slight (...) difference between 4k and WQHD. I'll check.
Your Mac has a Thunderbolt port. They accept a mini displayport video connection.

the monitor includes a displayport input. So all you need to purchase is a displayport to mini displayport cable. About $10
yep that's what i bought this afternoon (it's 23:13 local time now). will try another brand, see if that might help.
on the other hand, should also work via HDMI, as my acer 2011 desktop model handles WQHD well via it's HDMI output channel
Typically older Macs only support 1920X1200 via HDMI
Finally solved the issue by adjusting the display settings on the Philips monitor and using the mini display port to display port cable.
HDMI and DVi did not work above 1080p.
