Once I unlock my phone the notifications that were on the locked home screen disappear. Sometimes there are to many to remember what was there on the locked screen. Is there any place, such as a log where I can review them?

That doesn't help. I will sometimes see something on my lock screen as I'm unlocking my phone. It disappears before I can tell what app it's from and it doesn't appear in my Notification Center, so it must be a banner or something. Isn't there some way to see what was on your lock screen?

On Home screen, swipe from the top down to reveal the Notification Centre.
You also need to make sure the notification setting for the app you want to be able to see after you've unlocked your phone is set for alerts not banners. Go to settings, click on the app (or find it under notifications), then on notifications, then scroll down to where it says "alert style when unlocked" and make sure "alerts" is selected and not "banners".

In your case do not unlock iPhone.
If you have touch ID then use the finger that's not registered or use the Sleep/Wake button instead of the Home button.
