After the last couple of driver updates for Mavericks, my printer won't print just black although it is using the black ink to shade colors darker. I previously used another driver but didn't buy it after the trail period was up but now I'm getting desperate. Unfortunately, I can't remember that driver's name. Does anyone have a suggestion for a driver for an epson stylus photo r260 inkjet?

Your printer should be supported by the drivers from Epson. Alternative drivers would be Gutenprint (free) or the PrintFab/TurboPrint (commercial-not free).
How are you trying to set the print to just black? Are you setting the color to Grayscale under Print Settings in the Print window?
Should be the same for the 260 as the 280.
Somehow you have missed the point...
The way we get drivers in Mavericks and Yosemite has changed.
Manufacturers give Apple the "current" drivers to keep on Apple's servers.
When you Add ( + ) the printer in Print & Scan prefs, OS X auto-installs the current driver.
If that hasn't worked for you, Reset the Printing System and try adding again:
