I get the message "To view this web content, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment" Do I need two versions as this article suggests?

I just upgraded to Yosemite on my 2010 MacBook Pro. When I reboot I get the message "To view this web content, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment" and I've also seen the same pop-up once while running OpenOffice. And now while composing this post.

Yes - I followed the link and installed the Oracle version of Java, version 8, and the test page confirms that I have the current version running.

I read some threads on discussions.apple.com but didn't like the answers.

I found this: http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-software/advanced-tips-for-mac-os-x-yosemit e-3582877/

and tip # 10 seems to answer my question.

Anyone else have experience on this?

OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Yes I have the Facebook Video Calling Plugin

But as I said in my original post I have already installed the JRE - the latest one from Oracle. Version 8.25.

The article from Macworld that I referenced suggests that the fix is to ALSO install the version 6 JRE available on the Apple web site. Wondering if anyone has solved this problem by running two versions of Java simultaneously.

Thank you, but Yosemite would not let me install this version. Since the message to install Java Runtime Environment appears frequently, and since I usually have only Apple applications open, I assume this is an issue Apple needs to correct.

Unless there is some other fix I can make, I will have to put up with the annoyance of seeing the message even though, as far as i can tell, my applications all work as they should.

To be clear -- I run Yosemite. When I tried to install the Java version from the link you provided, the installer simply showed a message (not saved, sorry) that indicated the java version is incompatible with my computer.

On the other hand, I found a link to a different version of Java in another Support Community thread, and it installed smoothly and I have not seen that annoying message since!

If I get a chance I will try to find that thread and post that link.

Thanks for your help.
