iPhoto 6.0.5 can't import from Canon PowerShot A540

iPhoto 6.0.5 has a problem importing photos from a Canon PowerShot A540. The Import display comes up, then disappears then reappears, etc.. This error message appears every time on the console:

PTPCamera(271,0xa000cfc0) malloc: * Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0xa1b1c1d3; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug

Anyone else see this?

Here are some questions for you about your situation:

Do you get an icon on the desktop when you plug the camera in?
Do you have a USB card reader you could try in an attempt to isolate the camera as the cause of the problem?
Have you tried this on another computer?
Have you tried this on another user account on your computer?
What brand SD card do you have in the camera? (knock off brand memory can sometimes be problematic)
