thanks for the response. Sadly not solved yet.
I checked through the link and did the imagent force quit. It went for a second then re-appears. Started Messages and get the log-in screen, but sadly still doesn't work. checked the hosts file and there isn't a firewall issue here.
Any other ideas?

It's been happening for weeks not only on my MacBook Air, but my iPad as well. Did you ever fix the issue? I'm desperate. I receiving the exact same error/authentication message as you did. I've searched the Internet/forums on here for almost 4 hours now. Nothing is helping me.
