I broke the screen on my iphone 5 it was still working for a while but then my child got some food on it where the bits of glass had broken off and the screen went off a while back now, but the backlight still comes on when I turn on does that mean the phone still works and I just need to replace the screen?

When you take it to the Apple Store for screen replacement, they will examine the phone and determine whether they can replace just the screen, or whether they'll replace your phone.
I should add nothing happens when I plug it into the PC but then the phone does have a passcode on it and it's not trusted to this pc, but it doesn't recognize it,,,
There is no apple service store near here, or by the looks of it in Ireland I just searched for one on the Apple - Find Locations - And if there is it's going to be a long drive in any direction from when I am, I just want to know if that sounds like the phone is completely broken and not worth the long drive or whether it sounds fixable based on the information I gave that the backlight works, but no response when connected to the PC...
