how to display treeview in Finder

Using Yosemite (10.10.1), when I open a desktop folder, Finder displays items by currency: 'previous 7 days', 'previous 30 days' and so on. How to display a simple treeview of folder contents? This used to be possible, I think. I found a topic in Finder help, called 'Ways to view items in Finder windows'. It did not discuss this, which implies it is not possible.

Hoping to find a simple treeview display of folder contents, regardless of items' currency. How?

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Here's an example of a treeview:

User uploaded file

Note that items are displayed hierarchically, not by currency. This is the type of display I want when I click a desktop folder. The example screen cap here is of Finder after clicking 'MacintoshHD'.

To summarize, clicking on a desktop folder, all views in Finder seems to sort by currency. Clicking on 'Macintosh HD' displays items hierarchically, not by currency. My memory is that in earlier OS X versions, the hierarchical display was available when opening a desktop folder. Now, using Yosemite, the hierarchical display is not available, everything displays by currency.

In Yosemite, is there a way to open a desktop folder and see a hierarchical display?
