Until recently, a complete System 7.5.3 (nineteen files) and a 7.5.5 update could be downloaded via an older software list at the Apple site. However, this list does not appear to be available any more (an Internet archive search for the very old asu.info.apple.com could possibly return some early results of interest).

Unfortunately, this means that it has become much more difficult to help people in need of system software for old Macintosh computers.

With access to the aforementioned files, it was possible to carry out the System 7.5.3 installation from an external drive (hard disk or CD-ROM), providing that the files were properly decoded and that an appropriate bootable system (7.0.1 or higher) was already on the computer. The downloadable System 7.5.3 as such was not a conventional set of system floppies (even though the individual files were floppy-sized). Instead, the nineteen decoded files together constituted one single large self-mounting disk image (.smi). If at all necessary, the System 7.5.5 update was added once System 7.5.3 had been installed.
