Explanation of symbols in iTunes

Really basic question: What do the various symbols that show up in the left column in iTunes mean? I'm seeing a blue dot for some podcasts, and those podcasts will not play, even though I select them and click the Play button. Others in the same series, before and after, play just fine.

If the answer to this question is anything like RTFM, where do I find the FM to read?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.7), 2 GB RAM, lotsa shareware/freeware

Added info: I stated the problem incorrectly. The items will (sometimes) play, but will NOT allow me to drag them from iTunes to my iPod when I am in manual update mode. If I select two podcasts, one with the blue dot and one without, the one without goes to the iPod while the other is ignored.

What does that blue dot mean and how do I get rid of it and get this podcast to behave?

From iTunes 6 Help:

"A blue dot next to a podcast episode means you haven't started listening to the episode. A blue dot next to a podcast means there is at least one episode of that podcast you haven't started listening to yet."

So I wonder if you have to listen to it first before you can drag it to the iPod. That would pretty much defeat the purpose of having it on the iPod.
