What OS are you running now? If 10.6.8, then there isn't an update. You have to upgrade to a newer OS.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

Etrecheck – System Information

Computer running slow could be 3rd party additions, such as anti-malware, Mac cleanup softare. You could post the EtreCheck output for the forum to analyze

Slow network access could be from a cloud backup service (you would have had to signup for it, so you would know if you have it), such as Dropbox, CrashPlan, Carbonite, Sugarsync, bitcasa, etc...

Network connection issues could be from WiFi interference from your neighbors. You could use your route's admin interface and change your WiFi channel in an attempt to get away from the channels your neighbors are using.

Or it could be an issue with the default DNS server. You could try rebooting your WiFi router (as it is often the default DNS server), or specify your own DNS server via System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> DNS -> [+] and entering something like the OpenDNS 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220 or Google DNS 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 servers

Or if you have a Yosemite Mac on your home network, the AirDrop feature has problems that interferes with normal WiFi.

If, AND ONLY IF, you have a Yosemite system on your home network, then read down past the iOS stuff to where it talks about Yosemite.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

Your Mac needs:

  • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
  • 2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
  • 8 GB or more of available space

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Do a backup before installing.
If you meet this, download Yosemite from the App Store.
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.
