Q: Yosemite Messages Screen Sharing Broken?

I used to use Messages to screen share with my parents all the time when they needed software support.  However, now that I've upgraded their computer and my computer to Yosemite, I can not get it to function.

When I initiate a screen share from my MBP (13" early 2011) to my parents iMac (21.5" late 2013), there is no activity on their iMac.  No message or anything.

When they initiate a screen share from their iMac to my MBP, my computer shows the accept/decline choice, but when I click accept, nothing happens.

If I wait for the process to time out, it wants to send this error report message to Apple.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

UM-LINUX Guru's suggestion to downgrade to Version 3.7 of ARD clients does work.

I was able to get Screen Sharing to work once again over the internet between two MAC Pro computers that were using Mavericks.

Hopefully Apple will figure out what went wrong with the ARD 3.8 client upgrade.

Unfortunately, I now have the App Store bugging me again to make the update.

If you'll recall, my dad has Mavericks and I have Yosemite. We couldn't get screen sharing to work. This past week my Dad had a security breech on his computer and I decided to wipe his computer clean and then start fresh with Yosemite. That's probably not the answer that everyone wants, but it did solve our screen sharing problems. We both have Yosemite now and screen sharing is working normally again. It is one way to solve the problem.

I have the same problem trying to support a ML machine from Yosemite.  I can find the remote management folder in the location described, but I'm not sure what you mean when you say:

"archive RemoteManagement, then put RemoteManagement in the trash (as admin), and empty the trash"

What is the archive step?  If I remove it from the existing location, copy it off the machine, then delete it, I'm still unable to install v3.7.  Even after a restart.  The remoteManagement folder gets re-created?  I'm missing a step here someplace, but would really like to get v3.7 installed so I can do some remote support for a relative on their ML machine.

What is the exact sequence to replace Remote Management in Yosemite with the v3.7 from the download link in this thread?

    Thanks

Archive means to zip it up in case you need it back later.

Just delete the folder (drag it into the trash) because you will probably not need it anyway.

Then download the older client using the link Apple Remote Desktop 3.7 Client .

Be sure to put it in the place of the older folder.

You will want to probably reboot just to clear things up, then try using screen sharing.

    Good luck.

    That's basically what I did.

    • Located the folder in CoreServices
    • Copied it to the desktop.  Zipped that copy and moved it off the computer.
    • Deleted the folder in CoreServices and emptied the trash
    • Restarted the machine
    • Ran the installer, and got the same error message (newer version already installed).

So I replaced the "new" one with the original and gave up for the moment.

Did I do something out of order?.

After deleting the folder and before restarting, run the installer for the ARD 3.7 client.

After running the installer, check to be sure the ARD 3.7 client is installed.

Try screen sharing first without restart.

I suspect the restart before running the installer is recreating the ARD 3.8 client because it is missing.

    Good luck

I recently had this same problem while trying to use the screen sharing function of Messages. The problem turned out to be with the remote machine, not mine. We were able to solve it by doing the following:

    1. Turn ON the firewall: go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > "Turn on Firewall"

    2. Allow incoming connections for Messages: "Firewall Options", then add ("+" icon) Messages application

    3. At this point the problem was fixed, but what we found is that the firewall could then be turned off and it was still fixed.

    Hope this helps someone else.

Apple released an updated ARD client - ARD 3.8.5 a month or so ago.

It seems to help when using a non-Yosemite computer but we are still sometime getting an occasional time out without screen sharing.

You are correct that you either need to turn off the firewall or add the Messages application into those allowed applications that can receive and send packets through through the firewall.
