Mac messages show phone number and not contact name

I just purchased a Mac Air and I have been trying to find a solution to a problem I have with the messaging app. When I send or receive messages on the app, the conversation is referenced by my contact's phone number and not my contact's name. My iPhone and Mac are synced through the iCloud and messaging is enabled. I also have my Buddies names checked off to appear while they do not show. How do I get my contact's names to appear in messaging versus their phone number?

Please try each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.

Step 1

On the Mac, open the iCloud preference pane and sign in if you haven't already done so. Check the box marked Contacts. Do the equivalent on your mobile device(s).

Make sure that your contact accounts are enabled in the Accounts tab of the Contacts preferences window.

Step 2

From the menu bar, select

 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Language & Region

From the Region menu in the window, select one of the preset regions. If one is already selected, choose a different one, then change it back. Close the preference pane. Quit and relaunch Messages.

If you still have the problem after taking those steps, post your results.

I did all the steps and am still having the issue.

The issue starts when I switched gmail accounts.

So if I type in a new contact name in messenger, that is a recent entry, it finds the correct contact and number, but doesn't display the name.

If I enter a new contact in my phone, it doesn't display in iCloud.com or in my contacts on my mac. Yet somehow messenger recognizes it and finds the number but doesn't display the number...?
