Share iTunes music on iPhone 6???

OK, we have 2 iPhone 6's. I have downloaded and purchases lots of songs from the iTunes store. When I click on Music on my iPhone those purchased songs are there so I can listen to them. I set up iCloud on my iPhone and want to be able to let my family member also listen to those songs. What do they have to do to be able to share those as well? I have turned on family sharing I believe and under settings have turned on music. Do they have to sign into iTunes and set up family sharing on their phone as well? Do they have to set up an iCloud account as well? If so, do they sign in with their ID and password or my ID and password to see the songs I have on my iPhone? So confused on all of this and any help is greatly appreciated. Totally lost on this and need some help with a novice on an iPhone and with iCloud please.

Hi Gary,

Happy Holidays! Family Sharing is the new feature introduced in iOS 8 that allows up to six people in your family to share iTunes, iBooks and App Store purchases. Family Sharing requires each member to have their own Apple ID signed in to iCloud and iTunes. iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite are required to set up or join a Family Sharing group and are recommended for full functionality. Here's how to set it up and use it:

Apple - iCloud - Family Sharing

http://www.apple.com/icloud/family-sharing/

To get started, one adult in your household — the organizer — invites up to five additional family members and agrees to pay for any iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases they initiate while part of the family group. Once family members join, the features of Family Sharing are set up on everyone’s devices automatically.

Once you’ve set up Family Sharing, all the songs, albums, movies, TV shows, books, and apps ever purchased by family members are immediately available to everyone else in the group. And, of course, so are new purchases. The content appears automatically in the Purchased tab in iTunes, iBooks, or the App Store for each family member. Just select the family member whose collection you’d like to browse, then download or play the content you choose. Other family members can access your collection in the same way. If you want to keep some purchases private, you can choose to hide individual items.

All new iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases initiated by family members will be billed to the organizer’s account. But the organizer can still call the shots. Just turn on Ask to Buy for children in the family. When a child initiates a purchase, an alert is sent to the organizer, who can review the download and approve or decline it right from the organizer’s device. This applies to both purchases and free downloads.

Start or join a family group using Family Sharing - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201088

Use the steps below to start a new family group or join an existing family group. You can be a part of only one family at a time.

Get started

Here's what you'll need to use Family Sharing:

  • An Apple ID signed in to iCloud and iTunes
  • iOS 8 on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch or OS X Yosemite on your Mac

Start a family group

One adult in the family—the family organizer—can set up Family Sharing for the group. When you set up Family Sharing, you'll be asked to confirm that you agree to pay for purchases initiated by the family members you invite and that you have a valid payment method on file. Valid payment methods for setting up Family Sharing include credit cards and debit cards.

Set up Family Sharing

Use these steps in iOS 8:

  1. Go to Settings > iCloud.
  2. Tap Set Up Family Sharing, then tap Get Started.
  3. Confirm that you want to be the family organizer and that you're signed in with your personal Apple ID.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions.

Use these steps in OS X Yosemite:

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
  2. Click Set Up Family.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions.

After you set up Family Sharing, you can invite your family members to join.

Invite people to join your family

Use these steps in iOS 8:

  1. Go to Settings > iCloud > Family > Add Family Member.
  2. Enter your family member's name or email address.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions. After you send the invitation, you can check its status under the person's name in Settings > iCloud > Family.

Use these steps in OS X Yosemite:

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
  2. Click Manage Family.
  3. Click +, then follow the onscreen instructions.

You can also use these steps to create an Apple ID for a child and add them to your family group. When you create an account for a child, you must use a credit card as the payment method as part of providing your parental consent. After you create the child's Apple ID, you can change your payment method back to a debit card if you choose.

Join a family group

You can accept or decline an invitation to join a family from you iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac. If the invitation is sent to your email address, you can also respond right from your email. To accept an invitation in iOS 8, go to Settings > iCloud > Invitations. In OS X Yosemite, choose Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud > Manage Family. Then follow the onscreen instructions.

Here's what you'll be asked to do when you join:

  • Confirm your Apple ID and password.
  • Choose if you want to share your content and which iTunes Store account you want to share from.
  • Choose if you want to share your location. If you agree, your location can be displayed on family members’ devices in Find My Friends and Messages, and the location of your shared devices will also appear on family members’ devices in Find My iPhone.

What's next

You can share eligible iTunes Store, iBooks Store, and App Store content, family photos, a family calendar, your location, and more.

Sharing purchased content with Family Sharing

With Family Sharing, family members get immediate access to each others’ music, movies, TV shows, books, and apps, and can download them to their own devices any time they like.*

Share your purchases

When you join a family, you'll be asked to confirm the Apple ID that you regularly use for making iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases. Purchases from this account will be shared with your family members.

Use these steps to confirm the Apple ID you will use to share purchases.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8

  1. Go to Settings > iCloud > Family, then tap your name.
  2. Under Family Purchases, review your account information.
  3. If you need to confirm the Apple ID that you want to share content from, enter your password. If you prefer to share purchases from a different account, you can enter a different Apple ID and password.
  4. Make sure that "Share my purchases" is on.

Mac with OS X Yosemite

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
  2. Click Manage Family.
  3. Click your name and review your account information next to Family Purchases.
  4. Make sure that "Share my purchases" is selected.

Download content from family members

After you join a family, you can view and download items from each family member’s purchase history, and enjoy them on your own devices. Music, movies, TV shows, and books can be downloaded to up to 10 of your devices, five of which can be computers. Apps can be downloaded to any devices that you own or control.

Use these steps to view and download your family member's content.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8

  1. Open the store app that you want to download content from, and go to the purchased page:
    • App Store: Tap Updates > Purchased.
    • iTunes Store: Tap More > Purchased.
    • iBooks: Tap Purchased.
  2. Tap the family member's name to see their content. Learn what to do if you don’t see any content or can’t tap your family member.
  3. To download an item, tap the cloud icon next to it.

Mac with OS X Yosemite

  1. Open the iTunes, iBooks, or Mac App Store and go to the Purchased page.
  2. Select a family member's name to view their content.
  3. Download or play the items that you want.

Apple TV with software 7.0 or later

On your Apple TV, select Movies > Purchased > Family Sharing, then select your family member to see their content. You can access shared movies and TV shows on Apple TV, but not music.

Share content from a different Apple ID

You can change the Apple ID that you use to share once every 90 days.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8

  1. Go to Settings > iCloud > Family and tap your name.
  2. Tap your Apple ID and follow the onscreen instructions.

Mac with OS X Yosemite

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
  2. Click Manage Family, then click your name.
  3. Click Change, then follow the onscreen instructions.

After you change your Apple ID, you'll start sharing from the new account instead of your previous one. Your family members will no longer be able to access or download purchases from your previous account.

Any DRM-protected music, movies, TV shows, books or apps previously downloaded from that account will no longer be usable by family members. If they made any In-App Purchases from an app originally downloaded from your account, they will need to get the app themselves to regain access to the In-App Purchases.

Thanks so much for this information. But I am already stuck...I thought I had set up the family sharing but apparently have not and having an issue on my iPhone setting it up...(I don't have yosemite on my mac yet, only Mavericks) but do have 8.1 on my iPhone so guess I must use that to set it up. When I click on getting started it advises me I must add a payment option to my iTunes account. Says to go to settings, iTunes and Apps and set up a payment plan, but when I go there I can't find anywhere to set up a plan??? Doesn't make me sign in or anything and think it should, shouldn't it? Where do I set up a payment option in iTunes? I felt uncomfortable leaving that information in there so removed it after my last purchase, but guess I need to set it up again but can't find where to do it on my iPhone...or can I set it up on my Mac and it will carry over to the iPhone?

Dec 2, 2014 8:11 AM in response to Gary Schnetter

Hi Gary,

I think I see the problem ... you need to update your OS X to Yosemite to set up Family Sharing. "Family Sharing requires each member to have their own Apple ID signed in to iCloud and iTunes. iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite are required to set up or join a Family Sharing group and are recommended for full functionality."

The easiest way to update your billing information is to open the iTunes application on your Mac, access your account, add your credit card information and confirm your billing address, etc. You should do this before you try to set up Family Sharing. This article explains how:

Change or remove your payment information from your iTunes Store account (Apple ID) - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/ht1918

Change your payment information on a Mac or PC

  1. Click to open your account in iTunes. (You might need to sign in with your Apple ID.)
    Alternatively, you can:
    • Open iTunes.
    • Click iTunes Store.
    • Click Sign In and enter your Apple ID.
      User uploaded file
    • Click your Apple ID and select Account Info.

      User uploaded file

  2. From the Account Information page, click Edit to the right of Payment Type.
    User uploaded file
You can see the payment methods that the iTunes Store accepts in the Payment Type section. If you want to remove the payment method, select None in the Payment Type section. See what to do if None isn't showing or you can't select it.
  3. Change your information and click Done.
After you change your payment information, the iTunes Store places an authorization hold on your credit card.

Family Sharing

If you’re using Family Sharing, and you're the family organizer, you can’t set your payment information to None. You need to use a credit card or debit card. Only the Family Organizer can edit payment information for a family group. If you're not the organizer, you'll see this message: "The payment method for your Family is managed by [Apple ID]."

Cheers!

OK, this just isn't working right. I sent an invitation to a family member. He gets the invitation and clicks on the link and it says he is already part of the family sharing plan and to look in iCloud and it says "invitation sent" there but is listed under the family sharing plan????? He is also signed into my iCloud account on his cell phone, is that right? When he tries to sign out of that it says Password Required "Enter the Apple ID password for gsnicker@verizon.net (me - main acct) to turn off find My iPhone??? So how does he get set up for sharing my iTunes folder. I can see the songs i've purchased under Music on my iPhone but on his it says he has nothing to display????

Hi Gary,

Have you had a chance to update your OS X to Yosemite to help with the issues you are having with Family Sharing? At this point, I think you would be better served by speaking with one of our technical advisors. With your permission, they would have the ability to look into your account details, and possibly share your screen so they can see what is going on. Click on the link below to initiate this:

Thanks Judy, just updating this so anyone following it gets the results. Wasn't using my Mac for sharing so really had nothing to do with Yosemite. I restarted my iPhone and signed out and back in on each and was able to then download the songs on the 2nd phone under family sharing. There were about 20 songs that wouldn't download though and figured that out as well ... they were older Protected AAC audio files and although I could listen to them on MY iPhone (the primary) they couldn't be downloaded for some reason to the 2nd person in the family sharing because of this I guess. I know I couldn't copy them to a disc either for listening. Suppose there is no way to convert those to MP3, iTunes won't do it I know. Chatted with the above group and they helped me get the other's all downloaded though so appreciate your information and help!
