iPad went dead and now only shows low battery w plug symbol

Okay so this may be a stupid q but I'm desperate.

So last night my iPad battery was low, probably like 5% and I fell asleep before putting it to charge. This morning I tried plugging in the charger, but it didn't show anything. When I held down the power button, it showed the low battery with the plug symbol and a lightning bolt at the bottom of the screen. After a few seconds it shut off again.

I know the symbol means it's really dead and needs to charge, but is it still charging even though the screen shut off? Because I had it like that for more than 2 hours and it still refuses to come on. I held down the power button and the home button too, but it just did that same thing. & it won't connect to my windows computer.

Could it be because of my USB? It has been giving trouble lately and I only could charge my iPad if it was in a certain position. I'm planning on getting a new one tomorrow, but I'd like to know beforehand if this could be causing the issue.

Please and thanks!

Your USB what? Charger? PC's USB port? Cable? Assuming you have a valid electrical connection to whatever you are trying to charge it from, it should charge while the screen is off and the device is off.

Use the charger that came with the device to charge it along with the cable. If your "USB" is referring to the cable/charger and you know it's "bad" in some way, replace it. It could be the cable or the charger but we would have no way of knowing which.

If your "USB" is referring to a USB port on the PC, it's not a very good idea to charge from these since they often do not supply the proper electrical current to properly charge the device. It will likely charge but very slowly and nowhere near the speed of the charger that came with your device.

If you have an Apple Store near you, I'd suggest making a Genius Bar reservation (you'll need your Apple ID) to have all of the components checked out/diagnosed for free to see exactly what is bad. Then go about replacing what needs to be replaced (cable, charger or both) https://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

You might also want to check for lint/dust in the Lightning connector on the iPad mini. This is a common place for dust/lint/whatever to build up in and cause intermittent electrical connections.
