Installing iWork 09 on Macbook Air with Yosemite

I'm really hoping someone can help me out.

I currently have a 2010 mbp with iWorks 09. I upgraded to Yosemite, was forced to upgrade Pages etc., and HATED the "new Pages." I'm an Editor by profession and I found that new Pages just didn't have the consistent editing tools that Pages 09 had.

Luckily, iWork 09 still works on my mbp. So I'm just using that (if I open Pages 09, it'll let me use the older version of Pages rather than default to the new version).

Here's the problem.

I have the opportunity to purchase a Macbook Air, around a year old. Yosemite is already on there, as well as the updated version of Pages, Numbers, Keynote.

Using remote CD sharing (since the macbook Air doesn't have a CD slot), I tried to install iWork 09 from the original disc. It installed successfully; however, the application itself won't open. I get error messages about the compatibility of the operating system.

I would really like to purchase this Macbook Air but only if I can get iWork 09 (specifically Pages) to work. Does anyone have any tips on how I can do this? Oh, I also deleted the new Pages off the Macbook Air before I installed the software.

MacBook, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), iWork 09, Pages 09

You need to apply the Apple iWork 9.3 updater after the DVD install. That brings Pages, Numbers, and Keynote up to their final '09 released versions, and these are necessary for Yosemite compatibility.

Secondly, if you acquire a used MacBook Air, it is critical that the previous owner reinstalls Yosemite, and then shuts it down immediately upon reboot. Then when you take possession, it will boot, and present you with prompts for administrator, and your Apple ID. Otherwise, the App Store will see their Apple ID on the MBA, and cannot reconcile it with yours.

Note: Pages ’09 v4.3 (latest) cannot Share documents via Email with Yosemite — though it can export just fine. Note well that if you double-click on any Pages ’09 document, this will be intercepted by Pages v5.5.1 on Yosemite, and you may lose original content, depending on what features were used in the older Pages document that are not supported in Pages v5.

At this late stage, I would use Pages ’09 v4.3 as an interim word processing solution, with a defined migration strategy, to non-Apple word processing solutions. That means for every Pages ’09 document that you create, export it in Word, and PDF format. The latter, so you can see what it looked like in the original Pages document. Both exports, because one of these days, Apple will release a future OS X update that simply stops Pages ’09 entirely. You do not want to be without backup alternative document formats on that day.
