iPod 5th Generation - 2 questions

1. It has not been used in a long, long time (years) so of course am having to charge it - battery icon on screen flashes from all white to all green - charging through USB port on my iMac - is this normal?

2. Found some precious family photos on the iPod that I want to get onto my iMac - but am thinking I have a different iTunes library now from when I used this iPod - how do I get them onto my iMac so I can share them via my other devices and via email, social network? The SYNC choices I get when I connect it to iTunes talk about deleting these photos and replacing them with what's in my library. I remember I had an issue with my library a number of years ago, and that's why these photos are not there.
