iPad 3 freezes when trying to delete app or shortcut - iOS 8.1.1

I saved a web shortcut to my home screen and moments later decided to delete it. Now I've found that I can not delete ANY app or shortcut, using the method of holding a finger on any icon until they start to "wiggle" and then pressing the "x" that appears in the top left corner of deletable items. The wiggle starts, the "x"s appear, but pressing them does nothing, and the wiggle is... stuttery. Then, the lower half of the screen begins to flash between showing the icons and not showing the icons. On - off - on - off - on ... The only way out is a hard reboot.

I have tried resetting/erasing everything and restoring from a back up. I have tried erasing everything and setting up as a new iPad. (that broke some of my apps so I restored from backup again). In each case, the odd wiggle behavior and lockup of the device occurred whenever I attempted to delete anything.

I *can* delete apps through Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage, but it is a slow process and it still leaves me unable to clean up shortcut icons.

Any ideas? Anyone else having this problem?

I have the same exact issue ipad 3, 32 gig wifi only 8.1.1

Of note, I was doing a lot of app reorganizing when this started happening.

in other words, upgraded to 8.1.1, then started reorganizing apps, deleting some, etc.

At first it was first letting me delete from app drawer. however at some point it started exhibiting above behavior.

I restored from backup and above described behavior persists.

I Have had the same problem. Went to Apple Store. They erased the data, reinstalled the OS, reinstalled the apps one by one. Was able to delete apps. Went home and problem returned. Did system erasure on my own and reinstalled apps. Worked for about a day. Problem has returned. Planning to go back to the Apple Store. I think it is an OS8 problem. I Am interested in hearing what they do for you and if it works.

Let me know. I am just going to delete thru the setttings menu for now.

Do you have a lot of apps on your ipad? This ipad has all my kids stuff on it so there is a lot of stuff on it

I wonder if it has to do with the number of apps.

I also have a bunch of folder set up - maybe it has to do with folders.

I do not think that installation of any 1 app would cause this type of behavior

Went to the Apple Genius today. He did the same thing I did before. Cleaned out the system and restored with IOS8 as if it were a new iPad. Installed a number of apps and they worked fine at the store. Came home and restored from my back up. Found out that all pages would delete except page 3. The Genius told me that, if the problem continues, its in the processor and would require a replacement for $299. I have about 60 apps on my iPad. Up until I installed IOS8 there were no problems. Now I have this delete problem in addition to my email freezing every few days. My feeling is that the problem is with IOS8 and the fact that iPad 3 cannot handle it for some reason. Apple doesn't want to admit that because they would be responsible for fixing your iPad since they told you to install IOS8. For the time being I will solve my problem by sliding an app off of page 3 if I want to delete it. Eventually I will upgrade but this is not enough of a problem to make me spend the money for a new iPad.

Well, I have a lot more than 60 apps on my iPad, and dozens of saved shortcuts as well. I've done the wipe and reset at home and it didn't fix it (even for a day). I wonder how that would be any different that what they can do in the store. Sure not interested in putting in a new processor, either, if they broke it with iOS 8.1.1.Thank you for posting, this is great information I'll need for my visit to the geniuses at the Genius Bar next week.

I sent an email to Apple Customer service, explaining the problem and my experience at the Genius Bar. Stated I was upset at being told it was a processor problem that would cost me $299 to fix since it started right after installing IOS 8 and was shared by many others who had iPad 3. Told them I felt it was Apple's responsibility since they directed me to install IOS8. I requested that they either repair or replace my iPad. I am waiting for a response.

OK, the Genius had me reset "All Settings", which did NOT delete my apps or data. Surprise! I can now delete apps and shortcuts as I used to. I did perform a fresh backup to my PC before touching anything else so that the next time I need to restore from backup it will be a presumably good one. Before this success, however, the tech did agree that he thought it is likely a 8.1.1 issue. I will give this a try for a few days and see if the problem returns.

Yes! I changed to bold and the delete problem reappeared. I have been using bold all along but forgot to activate it when I did the reset. Maybe the reset had nothing to do with eliminating the delete problem. The problem may involve a connection between the bold setting and the delete function in the processor, all brought about by the downloading of IOS8.
