Q: iDVD messing up chapter marks, making them useless

iDVD 7.1 - I"m trying to burn a DVD of a movie I created with iMovie HD 6.0.4, under OSX 10.7.5. I haven't used these applications in a long while but all was going well until I got a message saying that some assets in the project had changed and asked if I wanted to update the project, with a warning that this may affect any chapter marks in the movie. There were only two choices: Update or Cancel.  Update certainly did mess up the chapter marks. They now all take me to the same spot in the video -- in other words, the chapter selections on the screen menu are totally useless. So I spent several hours "recovering" my project. All works well on the computer (in "preview" mode in iDVD). But when I click the 'Burn' button, I get the same message about changed assets, and the same warning. There's only two choices: Update or Cancel. Sure enough, the chapter marks became totally useless because when no matter which video menu selection I choose, it always takes me to the same spot (chapter) in the video.   So how can I proceed without messing up the chapter points?  (Please don't say get a later version of iMovie -- been there, tried that, bought the book, still hated it. Much prefer iMovie HD.  And I know there are MANY other people out there who are sticking with these older versions of iMovie/iDVD -- hope they can help me with this problem!!). Thanks for any help.

BTW, it's also been a long while since I used the Apple Discussion Forum.  Can't say I like this new format. Much harder to find specific advice, I think.

    There are a three rules with chapter markers that must be followed:

    1 - no marker at the start of a movie.  iMovie add one there automatically.

    2 - no marker in or within 2 seconds of a transition.

    3 - use only a thru z and 0 that 9 in naming chapter markers.  No other characters.

    Check the markers in your movie and adjust as necessary.  Also if you edit a movie after adding it to iDVD there's a bug in iDVD 7.1.2 that causes encoding problems.  So in those cases it's best to start over with a new project or , at least delete the movie button and remove the movie assets from the project and import  it again.

    Thanks, OT, for your quick response. It was helpful ...and inspirational (I was getting despressed about this problem!). I have now successfully burned the DVD. Here's what I did:

    1) I re-opened iMovie and checked that all was OK with my movie and its 11 chapter marks. None was too close to a transition. Everything was fine. I knew not to create a chapter mark at the very beginning. One chapter title had a comma in it, but I decided to leave it there and hope for the best (in the end, no problem).

    2) I created a new iDVD project, got the warning about changed assets and clicked "Proceed". I had to, to proceed any further. I decided to proceed with great caution, so after each of the following steps, I saved the project, closed the file, re-opened the file, and tested that all was still working OK (especially the ability to go directly to any chapter using the on-screen "remote" control)….

    3) In the Project menu, I checked the Info settings and changed the disk type to DVD-DL (as this was a rather long video);

    4) For the main screen, I selected an Old Theme (this video was shot in 4:3 aspect);

    5) For the two sub-screens, I selected the sub-screen of a different old theme (I like the way this handled the list of chapters better);

    6) On the main screen, I re-positioned some of the text, and assigned different fonts and colours of fonts;

    7) On the sub-screens, did the same;

    8) I renamed the first (automatic) chapter label. It was showing "Beginning" but I wanted something more relevant;

    9) On the main screen, I added three drop-in photos, maximum allowed;

    10) On the sub-screens, I added one drop-in photo to each, maximum allowed;

    11) On the two sub-screens, I replaced the background image with another of my own;

    12) On both sub-screens, I added music. The main screen already had canned music & I left that as is, but may try a change another time;

    Happily, after each of these steps, after closing and re-opening the file, the project video seemed to work fine on the computer. If a problem with chapter usage had occurred, I would have been able to isolate the change that triggered the problem. None of these did.

    So, with intrepidation, I clicked on "Burn" button, and inserted a blank disk when requested. It took a few hours, but turned out successful!

    CONCLUSIONThe most important thing is to ensure there are no unsaved changes in the iMovie file, when starting iDVD. In iDVD, save your work frequently (after every change) so it's easier to recover if necessary, and thoroughly "test" the video (in iDVD) after every change before making the next change. This takes more time, but can save a lot of grief (& wasted time) later.

    Hope this advice can help others. Thanks again for yours.

    i forgot to mention that before starting iDVD, I turned OFF the following in System Prefs:

    - Time Machine

    - Energy Saver

    - Screen Saver

    i didn't want anything interfering with the iDVD process.

    Good thinking.

    Also follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:

    Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

    To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

    Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

    Thanks.

    I'm using Verbatim DVD+R DL disks for this project.

    Apparently DL disks burned from disc images may not play well on some players. This warning appeared when trying  Save as Disc Image.

    MAybe still a good way to test the video before burning normally.

    You're right.  Forgot about that.  I believe it's the 1st layer to 2nd layer transition point that is at risk.  But as you mentioned it should be a good way to preview the encoding.

    I have done this with every DVD I have ever made.  Never had a problem.

    Hi

    There were only two choices: Update or Cancel.  Update certainly did mess up the chapter marks. They now all take me to the same spot in the video -- in other words, the chapter selections on the screen menu are totally useless.

    THIS IS THE iDVD BUG !

    May be said above - but I didn't see it !

    MEDICINE !

    IT is hard to use one old one  - It is said that if You do

    - Trash all Chapter-marks in the iDVD Project

    - Then Clean all Assets

    - Re-introduce the Movie into iDVD Project

    It should work.

    Never done so for me - BUT I do always :

    - Start a brand new iDVD Project

    - Re-build it's structure and layout

    - NEVER return to original material for any alterations (Video-editor etc)

    - Save my DiskImage (in iDVD)

    - Test this with Apple DVD-player tool

    - If OK use Apple Disk Util tool to burn the DVD disk

    (not recommended if DL-DVD is used - then let iDVD do the burning at slowest possibly Burn Speed)

    If Problems found - Start a new iDVD project when corrected - till all is OK.

    Yours Bengt W
