Q: ios 8.1.1 on new iPhone 4S 8GB?

Dear iPhone users! :-)

I have a brand new 2014 iPhone 4S 8GB (you can't find a bigger one in stores at the moment). I know I could upgrade to ios 8.1.1. via iTunes without sacrificing much of the storage on my phone. My questions are:

  • have someone with the same telephone upgraded via iTunes? If yes is it true that the upgrade is of only 700 mb?
  • what are the ups?
  • what are the cons?
  • have you experienced battery drains?

BUT the biggest question is:

Would you recommend the upgrade?

Thank you soooo much in advance for your replies!

I would give you this advise. If you have no issues running the apps you wish to run (some apps now require iOS 8) or any need to use one of the new features

    https://www.apple.com/ios/whats-new/

in iOS 8 (some of which will NOT be available to your iPhone 4S anyways), I would stay at iOS 7. I would maybe be a bit more inclined to recommend iOS 8 on a higher memory device than the *8GB* iPhone 4S but not by very much.

Performance on your device may suffer but it's hard to verify if it will or not. The only way to know for sure is to update...but once you've updated, you *cannot* backdate to iOS 7.

Sometimes, it's just best to stick with what you've got and what works for you.

Yes that is more or less what I thought myself, but then someone told me that the memory used for the upgrade is of only 500-700 mb so I thought I might give it a try, but now it is impossible to downgrade so I am being extra careful... :-)

    Thanks for the answer!

There's some good info out there regarding this very issue if you search for it. Using Google, I typed in "upgrade iphone 4s to ios 8". The first three results listed are articles specifically written to address this issue. I won't post the direct links to the articles here (I'm unsure about linking in all of the various forums I visit as they all differ) but I've given you a start and hopefully others will post here as well with recommendations.

Also note that some of the articles were written with iOS 8.0 in mind. Since then, iOS 8.1.1 has been released with changes specifically addressing the iPhone 4S and iPad 2's performance issues. You may want to change your search criteria to reflect iOS 8.1.1 rather than just iOS 8.

Yes I did search, but I wanted to hear from some users directly! :-)

Thanks I will read the articles!
