ios 8.1.1 on new iPhone 4S 8GB?

Dear iPhone users! :-)

I have a brand new 2014 iPhone 4S 8GB (you can't find a bigger one in stores at the moment). I know I could upgrade to ios 8.1.1. via iTunes without sacrificing much of the storage on my phone. My questions are:

  • have someone with the same telephone upgraded via iTunes? If yes is it true that the upgrade is of only 700 mb?
  • what are the pros?
  • what are the cons?
  • have you experienced battery drains?

BUT the biggest question is:

Would you recommend the upgrade?

Thank you soooo much in advance for your replies!

If you use iTunes to update, you should have no problems, I updated my 4s successfully, but I have more than 8GB storage 🙂

Since your phone is new and probably still under warranty, you should be covered in case something is not working as expected after the update.

My iPhone 4 is still working running 7.1.2, but as the 4s always has been a bit faster, there is really not that much difference between those two models if it comes to 7.1.2 and 8.1.1.

Hello Curly0675 !

I have a kinda off-topic question for you if you don't mind 🙂

I'm thinking of getting an iPhone 4s 8gb as a christmas present. Yet i'm curious which exact ios version is running on that device.

As i can see you are running ios 7.1.2, is this the ios version which was already installed on the 2014 device ?

Would appreciate your answer !

Regards, Tim.

Hi, I do not recommend the upgrade. I have a 16GB 4S with iOS 8.1.1 system and the camera does not work for videos and freezes for photos. That after updating, because it always worked perfectly with 7.1.2. There are several threads talking about this. Apple has given no opinion on this. I've also read that there were other problems with the 4S, I have only this problem with the camera and went with the upgrade to 8.0.2 and not 8.1.1 arranged with.

regards

Then you need to do some trouble shooting to get the phone working properly again as the problem is with your particular phone and not everyone else's.

I have never had an upgrade issue with any of my phones which includes 2 4's, a 4S, a 5S, and a 6. There's always the possibility you might get a bad install but that is true with anything including computers but the chances are small. If that happens you install again. If your phone is working properly and there are no features on iOS 8 that you need then keep the phone the way it is. Security issues are pretty much nonexistent on an iPhone unless it's jailbroken or apps were obtained from outside Apple's App Store. I'm not going to tell you if you should or shouldn't. I can only share with you my perspective. Hope that helps.

Your welcome. You brought up a good point about apps. New apps you may want in the future might require a newer OS to install, and sometimes existing apps can't be upgraded but you probably won't have that problem for quite some time. Similarly, while the 4S is still a good phone it sometimes doesn't have the horsepower to run the latest and greatest but I suspect you were aware of that when you bought it. Cheers.

Exactly!

And yes, I was aware of that, but I love the design and unluckily the new iPhone 4s are only available with 8GB... I wanted to buy the 32GB version, but I could only find refurbished phones and I wanted a new one! :-)

Thanks anyway for your message! And yes, should I have some future issues with my apps, I will think about upgrading! :-)
