It depends on the operating system versions on the two computers. The information at http://www.applefool.com/se30/#afpnetwork could perhaps be of interest in this context.

Because of "normal" file sharing incompatibilities between certain system versions, a generic protocol like FTP may be a good alternative. For example, it is possible to install a small FTP server (such as the now free NetPresenz) on the Power Macintosh 6500, and then use an FTP client at the iMac.

The iMac is on OS 10.9.5 and PowerMac 6500 is on OS 8.6. I have no problem sharing files between PowerMan G4 (on OS 10.4.11) and PowerMac 6500 using AppleShare by connecting to server G4  from 6500. Actually I am not really sharing but transfer PDF files from G4 to 6500 to print (one way).  I am now trying to do the same thing  between iMac and 6500. Any idea?

If you take a look at the table under the aforementioned link, you will notice that there is a difference when attempting to connect from a Mac OS 8.6 computer to a Mac OS X 10.4 and a Mac OS X 10.9 computer. So, an unaltered 10.9 does not appear to work with normal file sharing. You should still be able to install NetPresenz on the old computer, and then use an FTP client from the modern machine to upload (push) the files.

Another solution, if you have a number of PDF files to transfer on only a few occasions, could possibly be to produce a CD-R in an appropriate format (on a modern Mac or PC with a CD burner), and then read that disc at the Power Macintosh 6500. Alternatively, if both computers can access the Internet, you could carry out the transfers as email attachments or via a "cloud drive".

Thanks for providing several different solutions. In the past, using WiFi, I transfer files from iMac to G4 and then using Ethernet to 6500. I am interested in FTP procedure but have never used. How do I go about doing it ? I already have downloaded Netpresenz.

    Hi,

I once tested NetPresenz on a PowerBook 540 running System 7.5.3. The installation as such was easy (decoded from an old .hqx download directly at the PowerBook), and the setup was not too complicated (following supplied instructions). TCP/IP via the LAN ports of a router was used. When ready, it was possible to access the PowerBook FTP server from a Linux PC without a problem. In your case, a suitable FTP client compatible with Mavericks will be needed.

I am confused now.  I am trying to move files from iMac to PM 6500, which is just opposite of the situation in your old discussion. Then,  iMac should be a FTP server instead of a client. Right?

Yes, if you try to use web browsers (in order to merely download files), an FTP server would have to be on the iMac side. Such a server would not appear without modification/installation under 10.9, though.

However, you should be able to upload (put, push) files from the iMac to an FTP server on the 6500 through the use of a dedicated FTP client on the iMac. You may want to check compatibility and study upload procedures for clients that could be of interest (such as Fetch).

I found Cyberduck as a FTP client for iMac. My question now is do I need to use any software for the 6500 such as Netpresenz?

Yes, you will need an FTP server such as NetPresenz 4.1 on the 6500.

Finally, I got FTP worked using Netpresenz on the 6500 and Cyberduck on the iMac. Thanks for your help.
