iPod Touch (5th Gen) Battery Won't Hold Charge

After the last update my iPod Touch 5th Gen will not hold a charge. I haven't had any problems with it until this 8.1.1 update. Yesterday I charged the battery up to full charge and used it briefly to listen to music in my car however here it is the next day and the battery is dead again. It is NOT playing while not in my car. Meaning nothing should be running the battery down because it's not being used. I know it's not playing because the volume is set to half way so I'd undoubtedly hear it if it was playing. It just won't hold a charge and for no apparent reason. Any suggestions?

I am having this issue as well. I purchased an ipod touch a year ago and it worked fine for several months, then it started not holding a charge. Genius bar replaced it with a new, same generation ipod in October. It is the middle of January, and this ipod just started having the same issue.

Has anybody checked to see if this is a non apple certified lightening cord issue? My car charger is not an apple certified charger. the cable is, but not the power supply on it. I am wondering if the charger is somehow damaging the battery? My husbands has not had this issue, but he ALWAYS charges from the computer via USB port.

The battery is charging way TOOOO fast to full. Therefore, my guess is that the battery capacity is somehow compromised, meaning the device thinks the battery is full, but in reality, it may only be 1/3 full. I can go from being unable to turn it on because it is red lined to 1/2 charged in 10 minutes. This would explain a quick drain. Does this ring true for anybody else out there?

First I should say my i-touch is almost 4 years old. A new indoor record. And Ii's been perfectly fine until recently when, just like yours, it won't hold a charge or even charge at all. I know they only design them to last 2 years and I haven't been offered an update for about that long, so basically the insides of my device are kaput. Also my battery does the same thing - says it's done about 3 minutes after I plug it in. In your case, because it's only a year old, I honestly can't think of what it is except it seems like there are a lot of people having the same problem. which makes me leary about buying a new one. One thing about Apple service - the Target where we live has Apple guys who work there and they are all really really good at what they do. Maybe try working with them instead of an Apple store which is just a bad scene all the time. Good luck!

Ok thanks for the advice. I have restored to factory as suggested and while the battery wasn't completely dead this morning it was half way there from full charge (only 9 hours between fully charged to unplug and it wasn't used at all during those hours). I can't even begin to imagine how it's a hardware problem considering before the update I could go DAYS without charging it and after the update I have to charge it every single day or I won't have music during my 20 minute commute to and from work... (I don't use it any other time than that). So no... I don't think it's a hardware issue. I think it's an update issue that Apple need to look into.

One thing that I did notice is that the Mail App seems to bleed the battery life the most. I've changed nothing since the update so this is why I'm convinced it's a software problem. Thanks again for the suggestion it never occurred to me to try a factory restore.

I had this issue when I bought the iPod Touch 5 after three months of use. I could barely keep a charge for 24 hours , even when turned off. I took it to the Genius bar and they ended up replacing it with a new one. Six months later, the new one did the exact same thing. Almost two years later, today, my iPod will barely even charge. I hardly had enough juice to get the screen that tells you to charge it. This is definitely not a software issue (though iOS 8 did make it worse).

I went to Genius Bar in an Apple store. They did fix the problem, but every time there is a new update the problem starts all over again. I am over an hours drive to an Apple Store and the wait is horrendous. With an appointment I was there for over 2 hours before I was called up to help. I am going to try and fix it myself this time, but it will have to be done again after another update.

Wow. Got a similar problem with my iPod Touch Gen 5 with iOS 9.3.5. This iPod use to hold charge for at least 24 hours with minimal use. Now its 8 hours and the battery is dead. Turning off any 'push' or notification features that I can locate in the Settings didn't seem to help. I resort to 'restore' it via iTunes and turning off wi-fi and any push or notification feature and the problem remains. What did they do at the genius bar?

Did Apple provide another year of warranty for the replacement? What kind of warranty did they offer with the replacement? I am assuming that they gave you a 're-furbished' unit as a replacement but it apparently was good for a few months. Since the original post (December 2014) Apple did come out with updated iOS's that supposedly alleviated some of the battery drain issue. Not sure where I read that so can you tell me what iOS you are using. Thanks!
