if the predictive text disapearing was fixed in iOS 8.01 then it is still not working for me on ios 8.1.1. are they going to address this with another update? I never know when it is going to start working again. I'm tired of switching it off and then on again!

I think I have found out how you may have 'accidentally' turned predictive text off.
If you hold down (not tap) the emoji button when typing it comes up with 3 options and one of them is predictive on or off.
This means you can turn it back on wothout having to go to settings.
This is completely different to doing it with the tool bar for predictive text up and down.
When you say disappear, what do you mean? Try swiping up from the top of the keypad. Predictive text can be hidden or revealed by siping the top of the keypad down, or up.
I tried the swiping up or down thing but it didnt work. The only thing that did was turning the predictive text off and then on again.
I have had this same issue. Switching off predictive text and then turning it back on restores it, but that's about it. Restarting alone is not enough. Where the predictive text usually is located above the keys appears as only a thin grey line.
It does the same to me on both my iPhone and iPad.
I'm having this problem continuously on an iPhone 4S which is running iOS 8.3 at the moment.
With no user command, the predictive text appears to switch itself off and no amount of swiping up down or in any other direction will restore it.
When I go to the globe key, predictive has a green (for ON) switch. I flick it off, return to the keyboard, go back to the globe, select predictive and switch it on. Most of the time that cures the problem, but sometimes, several switch-processes are necessary to get it back running.
This happens across the board in Mail and Messaging and knocks-on to Apps which I have installed from the AppStore.
It's a nuisance and I'm sure Apple never intended it to work to its own agenda like this, so help, please!
In which application you observed this behavior?
I was also faced the same issue when I was using WhatsApp. I found the root cause how the prediction is turning off.
Here is the process that I followed to turn on and off:
1. Tap the smiley key as shown
2. Select the Predictive option to turn on and off.
