10.4.8 update breaks automatic WLAN WPA ReAuthention

Hello all,

After the update to 10.4.8 I was kicked off my WLAN every 60 minutes or so.
Never had such trouble before (and still don't have it on bootcamp'd Windows
on the same machine).

I found out something more about the WLAN problems. It doesn't have anything to do with radio interferences, but with security features.

My network uses WPA-PSK. The router (Zyxel) has an option "ReAuthentication Timer" in its settings. It was set to 3600 seconds (= 1 hour), that was
the default value. This sounded like the intervall in whitch I was kicked off the network.
I set it t 30 seconds and I was kicked off the network every 30 seconds. I set it to 10 seconds and was kicked every few seconds. I had to use a cable to reset the value to something else, because 10 seconds was not enaugh time to do it in the web interface.

I was never kicked off the net under 10.4.7 even when I used it for more than the 3600 seconds default time out. XP on the same machine is still able to keep connection even when the time out is set to 10 seconds. (But very sluggish....)

Sadly it is not possible to turn the time out off (at least not without disabling encryption at all), and the maximum value is 9999, that gives me nearly 3 hours of online time.

BTW: The computer used is a MacBook white, 2 GHz, 2 GB RAM, with
AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86) Firmware 0.1.27 connected to a
Zyxel ZyAir B-2000 v.2 router.

Hi.
I had the same issue with an Airport Extreme base station.

It seems to only happen when the base station does not brodcast its SSID.

Although I hate the idea of broadcasting a network name to my neighbors, I am doing this temporarily and it seems to work.

I had a similar problem when I switched from a Powerbook to my MacBook Pro and it was solved in a 10.4.x update, (although the MacBook Pro needs far longer to catch the network, causing Adium to lose connection when waking from sleep).
I then turned back off SSID broadacst (it's called "create a closed network" in Airport Admin Utility. Too bad it gets back with 10.4.8.

Could you confirm your iMac G5 does not have the same issue ? And could you try setting back your reauthentication timer to 3600, and turn on SSID broadcast (if it was off) ?

Thanks in advance. I hope thiw will help Apple correcting this as quickly as possible.

And by the way, since the big security advantage of WPA comes from reauthentication, I guess setting the timeout to 3 hours would bring your WiFi network close to this of a WPA-encrypted one.

Hello,

SSID broadcasting was allways enabled on my ZyXel router. I think it
is a good idea to do so, at least if you have strong encryption (WPA). It helps everyone to have an overview over the networks in the neighbourhood and makes it easier to find a "quiet" channel.

I get kicked off when the intervall set in "ReAuthentication timer" is over, no
matter if SSID broadcasting is on or off.

I have just double checked this.

Sorry, I cannot check this on the iMac G5. It doesn't have airport at all (Rev.A).

Btw: A WLAN with WPA and ReAuth only every few hours is still much more secure than a WLAN that only uses WEP. WPA still changes encryption keys every few kilobytes, even without re authentication. This prevents common methods for WEP hacking because they need to receive a few megabytes encrypted with the same key to decode the key.

Some weeks ago I received a call from Apple support, that they don't have a solution for me. They forwarded the problem to the engineering team, but they couldn't reproduce it there. So I am stuck with an Internet connection that breaks after 9999 seconds, unless I plug the Ethernet cable in. The Apple guy said, maybe a future update will cure it. 😟
