Tiger will not install- help please

40GB iBook 12" G4 new, (refurb purchase from apple.com)
arrived loaded with Tiger but I zeroed the drive to install Panther to match my other iBook 12" G4. (These iBooks are a gift to my parents, trying to give them identical computers). I tried to install Panther from standalone Panther install CDs and also from the other iBook 12" G4 30GB and I also tried cloning. The 40GB would not boot. I did see it boot to install the Tiger DVD that came with it, so I knew the hardware was OK. The Apple Phone Support had told me last week that this iBook would run the clone of the older iBook, but the Apple Store told me this week that the newer iBook is hardwired to never boot in an older OS than what it arrived with. So now I am told it must be Tiger. Fine.
So I tried to install Tiger from the DVDs that came with the iBook again- but I noticed there are 3 DVDs:
Two "Mac OS X Install Disc 1"s, one labeled
"Mac OS X version 10.4.2" the other is labeled
"Mac OS X version 10.4.4"
The other disk is labeled
"Mac OS X Install Disc 2"

I used the 10.4.4 disk 1, let it do the time-consuming check and it installed and asked for Disc 2. At that point it said there was an error with the install and asked me to do the install again. Kept asking for Disc 2. I shut off the power, zeroed the drive again and started the install with the 10.4.2 Disc 1. All I can get is the screen with the little file folder flashing the Mac smiley face and question mark.

I have tried re-zeroing the drive, tried to do the hardware check (that just gives me a reload symbol and an arrow).

I'm just trying to load the OS that came with this iBook because it wont load Panther. At this point I'd be happy to load either Panther or Tiger on it, and of course, it's Sunday so I can't get help from Apple phone support.

I have 4 powerbook G4s running Panther here, and Carbon Copy Cloner, and Standalone versions of both Panther (on CD) and Tiger, the original install disks for all the computers, firewire cables...

I need to get this iBook running, please help?

Powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Hi Rachel,

first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!

Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer

Thanks but- the problem is not with the older versions, it's with the versions that came with the computer. From the document you referenced:
"If you installed older software and are having issues with your computer, you can resolve them by using the software discs that came with your computer to reinstall the system software. "

That is what I am doing now and it will not install from the discs that came with the computer.

I assume that what I should have done is used the 10.4.2 Disc 1 instead of the 10.4.4 Disc 1- which BOTH CAME WITH THE COMPUTER. I was actually using the NEWEST OS software that CAME WITH the computer- and entered this conundrum.

Thank you for the welcome, and any help installing the software that came with the computer.

One more thing possibly involved? When I first zeroed the iBook drive I saw a message about not being able to run Classic if I zeroed the drive. The disc 1 marked 10.4.4 does install, but the problem occurs when I try to give it disc 2. Disc 2 does not mention an OS X version- except "Disc Version 1.3" and "includes Mac OS 9.2". Could the version 9.2 OS on Disc 2 be the problem? I'm really lost. Thanks for any help.

Rachel,

you wrote you had two Install disks 1 but only one Install disk 2, right? Do you know which disks match?

You also might want to try a minimum install first (so that you do not need disk 2 at all), and only then try to reinstall the rest.

The instal disk 2 for my PowerMac G5 (might be different for the iBook, check the folder "Packages" with File Buddy since it is invisible) contains Classic plus:
AppleAppSupport.pkg
AppleIntermediateCodec.pkg
GarageBand.mpkg
GarageBand10Loops.pkg
GarageBand20Loops.pkg
GarageBandApp.mpkg
GarageBandApp20.pkg
GarageBandDemoSongs.pkg
iDVD.mpkg
iDVD.pkg
iDVD5Themes.pkg
iDVDApp.mpkg
iDVDThemes.pkg
iMovie HD.mpkg
iMovie.pkg
iPhoto.mpkg
iWork Extras.pkg
iWork Fonts.pkg
iWorkTrial_CD.mpkg
Keynote 2.pkg
Pages.pkg

Uncheck all of these in the install options. Also uncheck all additional printer drivers and fonts.

Install disk 2, right? Do you know which disks

The install disc [sic] 2 was shoved into the same envelope as the 10.4.2 disc 1 with a thin paper between, so I am assuming it matched the earlier version, and from that infer that the problem may be that I used the 10.4.4 disc 1. But now it wont install from the 10.4.2 disc, even after re-zeroing the drive. When I zeroed the drive, it was using a firewire connection to my panther computers, and just now I noticed I had Utilities on my 10.4.4 disc, so I zeroed the drive again, and now am zeroing the free space on the drive. 4 minutes to go. I always enable Journaling even though I dont know what that's for. Apparently I also did not check the first time when it asked if i wanted to install OS 9 drivers.

You also might want to try a minimum install first
(so that you do not need disk 2 at all), and only
then try to reinstall the rest.

iMovie HD.mpkg

iWork Fonts.pkg
iWorkTrial_CD.mpkg
Keynote 2.pkg
Pages.pkg

Uncheck all of these in the install options. Also
uncheck all additional printer drivers and fonts.

OK, I am not sure how to do a minimum install. The choice I am given is to quit install and use the disc as a startup disk.
Doing that brings back back to the OS X installer. I have options on Destination but they are only: Install, Archive and Install and Erase and Install. I continue with Install. I can then "Customize" my install. I only have 4 items I can uncheck:
Printer Drivers
Additonal Fonts
Language Translations
Bundled Software.mpkg_title

Your disc 2 looks like the iLife package- which is on yet another disc for me that came with the iBook. Looking at my disc 2- from my powerbook G4 it contains 3 items:
Installing Mac OS X and Applications
Installing Mac OS 9 for Classic Support
Install Mac OS 9 System Support
So, it seems the problem may be because I did not install the OS 9 drivers when I zeroed the drive? How could I install them now?

Inside the Bundled Software.mpkg_title I can see the iLife install files- as well as Quicken 2006, CPU Help Files, Zinio Reader and I think these are games: Nanosaur 2 and MarbleBlast Gold.

But I think I get the point you are making- see if I can just get through a Tiger install- ANY Tiger install so I have an operating system and can go from there, yes? So I think I will uncheck EVERYTHING uncheckable and see what happens. So all those 4 items are unchecked, all that will be installed is "Essential System Software".

I'll post as soon as I get some results there, thank you!

o.k. Rachel, let's try a step-by-step approach:

1. unplug all peripherals (printers, mouse,...).
2. Insert the 10.4.2 Install DVD 1 and reboot while holding down the c-key.
3. Once the installer app has started select disk utility from the MENU
4. Reformat your drive, no need to erase (do not forget to install the OS 9 drivers, Journalling is good since it "repairs" the directory on the fly if something goes wrong)
5. Quit disk utility
6. Proceed with the installation until you see the "Customize" button
7. Uncheck all 4 options
8. Continue with the installation and report back.

Oct 1, 2006 11:16 AM in response to Gulliver

OK, you are brilliant. Tiger installed and booted.
Then I had the option to install the bundled software and I took it. Quicken, the games installed but when it asked for Disc 2, it crapped out again on the OS9 stuff.

I canceled out of that, and clicked on the Install Mac OS 9 System Support package (on Disc 2). I am not even sure why I am doing this, as I came to Mac at Jaguar, I have no Classic programs.

At 325mgs its not a huge commitment, even on a 40GB drive.

OK, Classic installed.

Now I loaded the 10.4.4 disc and asked it to install OS X Maybe I am asking for trouble, but I just want to get everything on this iBook that is supposed to be there. On the other hand, my stepmom is never going to use most of what's on the iBook anyway. She uses AOL email and that's about it. Maybe some pictures will make it on here, and whatever attachments she downloads. So things like iMovieHD remain to be installed.

Wow, it wants and hour and 36 minutes to install Tiger- as an update to itself. Yikes. I will continue the install, pray it works and I dont have to zero it again and live with a minimum install. Will report back when it's done.

Ancillary questions:

I skipped the .Mac free 60 day trial, I wonder if I can get that for her later, once she is up and running on the iBook.

I saw the huge number of people having problems with 10.4.8, I am not sure if I want to download the software updates. I stopped downloading updates after the iTunes 6.02 (or was it 6.04) problems.

Many MANY thanks... I was beginning to feel like a Windoze user again...
back when it's done...

Rachel,

you can add the additional software at any time after you succesfully installed 10.4.2. Just follow the instructions in this article: Using Restore discs with computers that ship with Mac OS X 10.3.7 or later

Once you finished the install, reboot and Repair permissions!!!! Then download and apply the Mac OS X Update 10.4.8 Combo PPC. Given that there are approximately 10 million users with 10.4.8 out there, the number of negativ reports is amazingly small, so don't worry about it. Remember to do some routine system maintenance in order to keep your system healthy: Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance.

If this answered your question please consider granting some stars: Why reward points?

Oy oy oy... just now when I had Tiger installed at a minimum, and the Classic files installed from disc 2, I used the 10.4.4 disc one again. Now it asked for disc 2, and I got the same error, saying there was a problem and I should re-install. Its another error loop, when disc 2 is removed it tells me to insert disc 2 and I can't quit the installer.
It did not occur to me to use the 10.4.2 disc when I already had 10.4 installed.

Power off and on and... unbelieveable, it boots to "Please insert the 'Mac OS X Install Disc 2' disc to continue installation."

Insert 10.4.2 and try to install it, by powering on holding the C key. Guess what... it boots to "Please insert the 'Mac OS X Install Disc 2' disc to continue installation."

I am really unhappy about this, feeling like a windoze user again. I guess I have to zero the drive AGAIN and do a minimal install of 10.4.4 AGAIN just to get a chance to install 10.4.2. At least I have that option thanks to you, but my love for Apple is weakened. This is all Apple screw ups, sending me 3 disks for restore that I STILL don't know would have worked if I had used them in the illogical order, instead of just sending me disc one and two of either 10.4.2 or 10.4.4, and I DID ask an apple tech BEFORE I tried the Panther clone, argh.

Given that this problem I am having is completely Apple's doing and I am already 3 days behind because of it (not to mention schlepping the iBook to France to give to my stepmom and then having to schlep it back here because I couldn't make it work) and I have a couple hours of work to RE do and still dont know if it will work, I haven't got much confidence in Apple at the moment- and don't dare risk being in ANOTHER position not to be able to even BOOT the computer! I don't even want Tiger, and all of this reinforces my desire to stick with Panther.

If this answered your question please consider
granting some stars: Why
reward points?

I think that I get that option when I mark the reply as "Yes, my question has been answered" and I fully intend to give you as many stars as I am able. OK now to wipe the drive again...
Thank you again, and I will be back when I get this done.

o.k. Rachel, let's try a step-by-step approach:

no periperals on the ibook

2. Insert the 10.4.2 Install DVD 1 and reboot while

this does not work. currently 10.4.4 is loaded but it's stuck in a loop asking for disc 2, which apparently I dont have. I have tried booting without a disc, booting with a disc, booting holding the C down with 10.4.2

Apple is probably really proud of itself for making it impossible to do anything without the matching disc 2 for the disc 1, including not allowing a fresh install of 10.4.2. It would have been nice if they had a warning on the discs they sent me. Or sent me disc 2 with disc 1 on 10.4.4.

3. Once the installer app has started select disk
utility from the MENU

Got that, on the 10.4.4 disc 1

4. Reformat your drive, no need to erase (do not
forget to install the OS 9 drivers, Journalling is
good since it "repairs" the directory on the fly if
something goes wrong)

At first i could not find "format" because it's under "partition" not "erase". So I did with a simple "erase". There is NO option to install OS 9 drivers. Then I found a "format" under "partition", so I did that. Still, nothing to install OS 9 drivers.

5. Quit disk utility
6. Proceed with the installation until you see the
"Customize" button
7. Uncheck all 4 options
8. Continue with the installation and report back.

done done done done and done. OK, with 10.4.4 running, if i load the 10.4.2 disc 1 I can see the contents and could "Install Mac OS X and Bundled Software"

I also tried shutting down with 10.4.2 loaded in the drive and holding down C as it booted up. And what happened? I got right back to the Tiger desktop with the folder opened to the disk.
My finger was STILL holding C down.

Oct 1, 2006 1:41 PM in response to Rachel Corey

And I just tried installing from OS X, using the icon on the disc that says: Install Mac OS X and Bundled Software- it rebooted and brought me right back to the same place.

This isn't "bundled" software, its BUNGLED software. They sent me the wrong discs.

And they gave me the wrong information.

And they have ridiculously over-protected their Tiger discs.

And I have wasted my whole day and some of yours. I apologize.

Oct 1, 2006 1:49 PM in response to Rachel Corey

Oh, and I have had to use Explorer 5.2 to read these discussions and post because Safari 1.3.2 wont load these pages.

I am now installing from the 10.4.2 disc 1 their "optional installs" (fonts, printer drivers, address book, ical etc) and if that succeeds I will keep trying to install everything from the 10.4.2 disc... what do you want to bet that it craps out in that loop again?

Oct 1, 2006 1:59 PM in response to Rachel Corey

"Install Bundled Software Only" on 10.4.2 disc one is an alias to- nothing.
"Read Before You Install" on 10.4.2 disc one is an application that wont run.

I don't know what to do about the stars now, if i say my question has been answered, do the powers that be from Apple think this iBook they sent me is AOK? Do the apple techs EVER read these threads? How do I give you stars while giving Apple raspberries?

I sure am steamed. Tomorrow I will call the Apple Doesn't Care people and have to explain all this to them, against their condescending attitude. I just don't have time because of the time lost today but I have no other choice.

Thanks again.

Hmmm those "Helpful" or "Solved" buttons only come up in Safari, so I glad that finally loaded! I only found two of your replies (I thought there were more) and I starred 'em!

I hope you are asleep by now, especially if you are in Europe!

Tomorrow I will report back what the good folks on the phone have to say.

Again, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
