How did you attempt to contact Apple? Did you use a number listed on an Apple website listed for Apple Care? What number did you call?

It appears you have been approached by one of the many "Unauthorized" outfits offering support for a fee. Opt to use these folks at your own risk. caveat emptor - ÇÇÇ

Please start your own thread rather than adding on to another with a totally different question as it gets too confusing and neither of you will get the attention your problem deserves.

At aprox. 6pm EST today, I was surfing the net trying to find a free T.V. episode when my browser froze and pop up purportedly from "mac-support" came up along with a recorded voice both of which told me my network had been breached and I was to call the number: 1-844-743-5318 to have assistance with malware.

I wasn't able to unclick out of the screen and began to worry that my computer had been hacked. I called the number and spoke with a man for 40min who told me he was with Apple Support. He told me a slow moving virus had infected my computer and requested access to my computer to run diagnostics.

He directed me to a Citrix Online site and asked me to download a program that would grant him access to my computer. I was doubtful and asked how I could trust him and he assured me that Macs had a very high built in security system and this company was the authorized assistance for Apple products. I followed his directions and granted him access to my Macbook Air.

He continued to ask me what I primarily used my computer for, advised me against downloading any programs that were not through the Apple App Store and proceeded to "run a diagnostic" on my computer and brought up my System Report which showed I had been infected by the Koobface virus and he demonstrated a string of code or messages which included the name "Gail" repeatedly (who I said was not known to me) as "evidence" that not only was this computer in trouble but my iPhone and the computer and iPhone of my partner as well. He said due to the fact that the network was breached, it would infect all computers on the network. He also opened my Keychain Access window and scrolled through however, my passwords were not shown.

He then proceeded to list all the "fixes" that would need to be done and gave a list of prices for Apple service fees ($750) and then his company, Support Buddy Inc.'s service fees ($250). I immediately clued in that this was all just a scam and began to be upset with him. He Googled Support Buddy so I could see they were a BBB listed company and he stressed that they wouldn't spend all the time explaining the problems if it were just a scam.

I hung up the phone, and immediately disconnected the screen sharing session. I called Apple Support directly (as I should have first!) and Eric walked me through administering Adware Medic on my computer. It appears my computer is fine but my mind is not. I feel utterly stupid for allowing this company to hoodwink me into granting them access to my computer. The email address that was used for the access was: *******.com

MORAL OF THE STORY: CALL APPLE DRECTLY 1ST! And never call Support Buddy for service!

Thanks for your story = told well. Let me add some details about the pertinent details you provide:

*although a small minority of folks may need the kind of service the Support Buddy Company provides, most of us here think it is a waste of money at the very least.

I bet they are do a scam where they pretend to be a legit site.  A double scam.  Like double agent spies.

Don't feel too bad.  At least you caught it before paying $'s.  The are pros in deception.

Thanks CCC; pretty impressive that you could track all that info! How to STOP this though?? Support Buddy may not be a great service but they are still a legitimate company who's been screwed just as much as me. Very frustrating. Who polices this ****??
