My old Apple id is no longer valid as the email I used has been discontinued by the service provider. I now use a new apple id to log onto my devices and FaceTime but unable to do the same for iCloud. It keeps asking for my old Apple id password which a) I have forgotten and b) i can no longer retrieve given as the old Apple id is invalid.
What do i do?

You need to get the password form the old Apple ID so you can sign out of it.
If you don't have a rescue email associated with the old Apple ID, then you will have to contact Account security, and see if you can get the password reset.

Apple ID's never become invalid. If the email the are associated with ceases to function they can be updated to a new email address through http://appleid.apple.com
/Assuming you have a rescue email associated with that ID you may be able to get the password through http://iforgot.apple.com

It isnt made clear to me in his question. (In my opinion) He does say "my new Apple ID" but people can call their newly renamed emails/ Apple IDs, their new Apple ID..

The go back to appleid.apple.com & log in with old email (& same password) & rename Apple ID back to what you want it to be.

That can never work if the email is no longer functional, as you will not be able to validate it. And even if you could you would need to remove the email address from the old Apple Id that has it to be able to use it with another apple id. And since the OP cannot log in to the old Apple Id, they cannot remove it.
it does work. I have done this myself & with family members.
Skip verifying the Apple ID.
& BOOM- you can sign out.
The old Apple ID doesn't exist if he renamed it- so you cannot reset a password for an Apple ID that doesn't exist.
but you can trick the system & rename it back & then sign out..

@sidkillednancy - tx buddy. The key was tat my new apple id's password was also the password for my old apple id. I used it to sign out of my old apple id on the phone and now signed in with the new apple id. Tx!!!
Sorry Phil, your reply did not help me unfortunately. Your first option simply takes me to trying to reset my Apple id but i already have a new one.
But the Op did not rename it. They created a new Apple Id. Different to the old one. So they have 2 Apple Ids.
