Q: Yosemite mail mailbox alphabetical sort doesn't work

Why am I having trouble getting one mailbox into proper alphabetical order, and how can I fix it? It moved a mailbox to end of list, and I can't move it back w/o a lot of trouble, involving possible loss of the mailbox & subfolders along w/ it.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

This article: http://www.amsys.co.uk/2012/blog/sorting-folderssub-folders-in-apple-mail/#.VH_G btbXp7e  worked for me. I have Yosemite, so the "Enable this account" line appears under "Account Information," not under "Advanced."

I am running OS X 10.10.2. I performed the above steps in the linked article above, but Mail did not alphabetize my mailboxes. I would like the mailboxes to stay in alphabetical order always. This seems like a very common, simple request. Apple has no solution?

I have the same issue that 5fireflies has.  Running Yosemite OS X 10.10.1.  The Werner1 approach doesn't work, even though I changed the "description" on the mailbox so that I was allowed to "Save" the changes.  Anyone found a solution?  New folders I add to On-My-Mac seemingly are added in a random order.  Can't manually move them accomplish alphabetical sort.

same problem here   Mail v8.2  \\ Yosemite 10.10.2

all my mail accounts are jumbled up (iCloud & Gmail).

The old trick of UN-ENABLE, ENABLE doesn't seem to work with Yosemite

Have logged into the web interfaces of all my accounts and the boxes appear alphabetical, its just within Apple Mail they are not.

I can manually drag and they stay, but a number of accounts have numerous mailboxes.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

so I was on the phone to AppleCare on another matter... and I thought I'd get this one looked at...  and SOLVED!

I was initially told by first support that they hadn't heard of this issue, so I pointed out this wasn't something new to Yosemite and has gone back years in OSX mail in my experience. A supervisor was put on the phone.

we started with the smaller of two Gmail IMAP accounts:

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP <<< don't say I didn't warn you!

tried the un-enable/re-enable again... to no avail

then we opted to un-enable and add the Account again using the Mail/Preferences pane (didn't resolve the issue).

Then mail did something a little odd. On deletion of this replicated Gmail IMAP account it removed BOTH copies of that account!

But when we re-added it again, it had resolved the Alphabetical mailbox issue!!! HUZZAH

...due to the amount of mail that was then re-caching we opted to resolve the iCloud mail account next.

This time on clicking remove it launched the Internet Accounts pane Mail/ACCOUNTS not the Mail/Preferences/Accounts pane that we where in.

clicked on iCLOUD and unticked Mail. Back into Mail/Preferences/Accounts and deleted iCloud account...this took us BACK to the Internet Accounts pane where we opted to remove the entire iCloud Account.

** at this point you will be presented with lots of DELETE/ MERGE pop ups as you are removing contacts/calendars etc... so be warned!!!!

but on re-adding the iCloud Internet Account, it had resolved the Alphabetical mailbox issue again! HUZZAH

Now the reason I've posted all the waffle to this simple REMOVE and RE-ADD solution

is that it didn't do what I was expecting when clicking the remove mail account symbol, and I thought it best to point this out to others having the issue.

and apart from it messing up my Address Book ON MY MAC Vs iCloud contacts (which was resolved thanks to that backup I took before I did  all this)

all is now well in the Alphabetical mailbox dept (for me)

Hope it works for you too!

Mail cannot do this, and they will not do an enhancement. Switched to Mozilla Thunderbird (kinda ugly but it works much better).

I use Google Inbox for email now. A client is not really necessary for me, and anything I can't get far enough from the horrendous iCloud. Concept is great. Execution is bad. Does Apple do UATs?

DO NOT BOTHER TURNING ACCOUNTS OFF AND BACK ON (that will cause more problems than it fixes)

Make sure you can see the mailbox list on the left hand side of the screen. If you can't, go to View > Show Mailbox List. Under "Inbox", simply drag the individual email inbox icons for your accounts in the Mail sidebar to the order you want them to appear. Restart Mail.

Simple as that.  Works in Yosemite.

OK, I found a fix. YMMV, but it looks like this.

    1. Quit mail.

    2. In System Preferences -> Internet Accounts disable the appropriate mail account.

            Untitled 3.png

    3. In Terminal:

            cd ~/Library/Mail/V2/IMAP-nameofyouraccounthere

        rm .mboxCache.plist

        find . -name Info.plist -exec rm {} \;

    4. Quit Terminal

    5. In System Preferences -> Internet Accounts enable the appropriate mail account.

    6. Open Mail

    Shortened version:

    1. Quit mail.

    2. In Terminal:

            cd ~/Library/Mail/V2/IMAP-nameofyouraccounthere

        find . -name Info.plist -exec rm {} \;

    3. Open mail.

I'm debating writing a cron-job to do this....

    EASIEST WORKAROUND!!!!!!

this thing has bugged me for a while but just solved it.

Create a master folder, and put all your other folders inside it!

Simply add folder, and then put others inside with drag and drop.

the bug that stops you moving folders around does not happen in subfodlers. so I now have three master folders for work, personal and home, and arrange everything else within those three folders at will without apple ******* it up.

(it is also great because it aids keeping focus within a topic )
