I have imac 20 inch mid 2007 with 2.4GHz intel core 2 duo, with 4GB RAM.Since upgrading to Yosemite, computer has become very unstable, and keeps crashing. Any suggestions for overcoming these problems please?
The model you have is likely over-upgraded with Yosemite 10.10, as the hardware is near its end.
There are crash logs and reports in the Console utility, that may point to a kernel panic or other
such problems; they may or may not be helpful if read though by some expert who can under-
stand their content. I'm not such a person. Could be the RAM or other hardware is not up to
the standard required of a modern OS X system. And your iMac is rather dated in this regard.
An upgrade of RAM is possible, to slightly higher total present 4GB, according to MacTracker:

Considering the computer shipped (usually) with 1024MB (1GB) installed, with 4GB in an older OS X
that model should've been able to handle Snow Leopard 10.6.8 easily; perhaps even Mt Lion 10.8.5.
Another aspect may be to check the hard disk drive capacity against the unused or free capacity;
as this can make a computer slow, should there be limited 'unused capacity' in the HDD, since a
feature of OS X is to use that capacity (when present) as Virtual Memory. A hard drive VM is slow
compared to chip memory RAM, given the read-write speeds to disk drive are not quick.
If the internal hard drive is too full of saved content, you may consider removing excess that your
work files created; no system parts unless they are so old they aren't usable in Yosemite.
An archive to external hard drive of important files, then when tested to be stored yet accessible,
the internal HDD originals can be deleted. But not system related content. Libraries to iTunes or
others could be moved to an external drive, then the OS X would have to be set to look there for
them; with the originals in the Mac deleted to free up HDD capacity.
You could consider a larger capacity newer HDD (of matching data speed read-write specs) for
the sake of discussion; or perhaps to speed up things, inquired with OWC macsales about the
ability and choice of product available to see if an upgrade to SSD is worth the effort. A solid
state drive, may be a match. Since your computer is almost an antique, the fastest replacement
data-rate won't work. So that's where you'd need to ask an expert, or match specs w/ OWC stock.
My suggestion would be to revert to an older OS X version. Made easier if you had a previous system
on bootable clone in externally enclosed hard drive; or in a partition in an internal hard disk drive. Or
see if the unit could respond with the scant RAM upgrade capability (2GB more) and a modern HDD
or an SSD upgrade. See the performance guide from TheSafeMac to get an idea if that'd help some.

According to several online sources of info, the model iMac you have is among several that are now
considered near 'vintage' & not quite obsolete. They can run Yosemite, but don't necessarily like it.

The Kernel Panic logs and Console utility action logs from the time & date of these
occurrences, may be helpful to determine what other activities were happening;
also have you've attempted to troubleshoot to determine if the cause was based
on a possibility of bad or defective RAM chips; low-quality? marginal spec?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Ifou don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

After posting my crash report I discovered an update to Adobe Flash that I had not yet applied. I have applied this update and so far have not had a recurrence of this problem. I'm not suggesting that Adobe Flash caused this problem (somewhat hard to believe given the severity of the failure) but I'm crossing my fingers and hoping my old Mac can last at least through to the next major Mac OS release.
Thanks for the Panic log links. They have led me to further investigation. But perhaps I should provide more detail on my situation. We have 2 iMac’s (mid-2007) identically configured with 4 GB of memory. Both iMac’s have been experiencing hard crashes (grey screen) since installing MAC OS 10.10.1 (interestingly as far as we can recall we did not experience crashes after installing 10.10.0). Both have USB-attached external WD Passport 2 TB disk drives with the latest firmware (Sept 2014) installed. The WD site states that the latest drivers come with MAC OS. Both are running Symantec Norton Antivirus for Mac V12.5. Symantec’s web site says this version of their software is compatible with MAC OS 10.10. Both are running Microsoft Office 2008 for Macintosh (mostly Word and Excel). The 1st iMac is also running Apple’s Pages and Numbers applications. The 2nd iMac is not. Both are using wired Ethernet (the 1st at 1 Gbps, the 2nd at 100 Mbps). The 1st iMac is used more and is failing the most (almost daily but not regularly or predictably). The 1st iMac has several additional external devices including a Firewire attached IOMEGA 2 TB disk (the Lenova web site says the drivers for this drive come with MAC OS), USB attached EYETV (upgraded to the latest drivers), USB attached ION Vinyl turntable (for converting vinyl to digital - running the latest s/w), USB attached HP Scanjet G4050 (to date I have not found a MAC OS 10.10 driver for the G4050 on the HP site and when we upgraded to MAC OS 10.9 this device was a source of problems so this device is not normally attached. When I do use it, it works fine). The 1st iMac uses the IOMEGA drive for local TimeMachine backup. The 2nd iMac uses the WD Passport for local TimeMachine backup. Both iMac’s also backup to a Time Capsule. I have run Disk Utility Verify on all local drives on both systems with no errors. I have run Apple’s Hardware diagnostic on the 1st iMac (2 extended passes) with no errors found. Running the same diagnostic on the 2nd iMac yielded the following error “4MOT/1/40000003:HDD” which I understand suggests a problem with a fan motor. We have sent this iMac out to be repaired. I have run the 1st iMac with all devices (except Ethernet) disconnected and I did not experience a crash. However I can’t say whether I ran it this way for long enough to state definitively that external devices are the cause. Crashes often seem to happen when I’m running Safari but I have also come back to my idle iMac and found it at the logon screen because it crashed and restarted when I wasn’t actually using it actively. I have looked at several of the Panic Logs generated by the 1st iMac. I can’t see any common thread but the interpretation of these logs is really beyond my skills. I'd appreciate this could be a problem unique to my situation except that is happening on both iMacs. I'm convinced the Panic Logs are the key but I will need to get help with them. And unless iMac (2007)'s are failing all over the planet I don't expect Apple to help. My next step will be to engage the shop that is fixing the hardware problem in the 2nd iMac to see if they can interpret Panic Logs.
On January 10 I removed Symantec per your directions. I have not had a (grey screen) crash since on the 1st Mac (the 2nd iMac is still out for repair but I will remove Symantec from it as soon as I get it back). Unfortunately this leaves me with no AV on our Macs. Any recommendations for an alternative AV solution?

My iMac is still crashing randomly so the Adobe Flash s/w does not appear to be the cause.
I have imac 20 inch mid 2007 with 2.4GHz intel core 2 duo, with 4GB RAM.Since upgrading to Yosemite, computer has become very unstable, and keeps crashing. Any suggestions for overcoming these problems please?
