Why are my Final Cut Pro X Files so large?

I am currently working on an IMac Quad Core Processor W / OS X Mavericks 10.9.5, with 16GB of RAM and 8GB video Card and a 1TB drive (512 Solid State/512 Hard Drive). I am using Final Cut Pro X version 10.1.3.

I am pretty new to a MAC system and still learning the in's and out's of the system and how to use it. I have done 4 projects in FCP X and I have around 28GB of data storage left on my 1TB drive. When I looked up one project that is 54 minutes long, it says that file is 500GB and it is not loaded with special effects at all???? Someone please tell me what I am doing wrong that these files are this big? I cannot believe that it would take that much space.

Here is some information on how I start a project...

I will create a new Library, then I will import media into separate events such as Camera 1 video, Camera 2 video and such.

Like I mentioned I am pretty new with FCP and a Mac system, help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Please let me know if there is any other information that you need to figure out what I am doing wrong.

Thanks,
JJ

You have the option to create optimized media and/or proxy media when you import your video, or at any time after that. Many beginners think they need to do that, but for the most part this is not needed. As it turns out, optimized media can be ten times the size of your original media.

The easy way to reclaim that space: select one library, do File->Delete Generated Library Files, and tick all the boxes, for optimized, proxy and render files. This does NOT delete your content, and if necessary these files can be recreated later.

Three things usually create bloat.

1) Copying files to the library,. Not usually necessary if you have them elsewhere on your computer.

2) Optimizing and creating proxies. You have a very fast computer, so if you are choosing to create that additional media, you probably don't need to.

3) Render files. Each time we render, FCP creates additional files. They add up fast. Turn off BG Rendering and don't render unless you can't perform your edits accurately.

There is a commend called Delete Generated Library (or Project) Files. It will trash your renders and transcoded media.
