Q: Is Mac book pro useful for Video Editing and VFX Work?

Hi Apple Team and Final Cut Pro Team,

I am Video Editor and Motion Graphic Artist. I do a lot of Video Editing work and I have to spend hours sitting in front of my Desktop and this is getting so hectic for me. So I'm thinking of buying a Mac book Pro. But before spending that much bucks, I need to be sure that I'm going for the best option available. below is the configuration I am planning to buy. Kindly suggest me whether this is the best option or not. If not, then Please suggest me your options.

Configuration:-

Screen:- 15.4 Inch retina display

Processor:-  2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache

Ram:- 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L onboard memory

Graphic Card:- NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Well I think all of the 2015 MBA and MBP models come with an SSD, correct me if I'm wrong.

I see, thank you. So I will go with something with an SSD or upgrade if I find a cheap 2012 model if that's the route I go. If its worth anything, I use ScreenFlow, not Final Cut Pro. Yes I have a $100 Toshiba external 1TB hard drive, any recommendations on external hard drives? And ok I'm new to the forum thing as I usually just read online material and rarely comment, but I'll see if I can find out how to post there thank you!

I missed that Screnflow was your editor. My comments about hardware acceleration were in regards to FCP X. I don't know whether Screenflow takes advantage of the Quick Sync Intels  or not.

For the past several years most of my drives have been purchased here. I've had decent experiences with their proprietary drives.

So, knowing that ScreenFlow is my main heavy CPU intensive program..would you still recommend something no later than a 2012 model??

Honestly don't know enough about Screenflow to be sure. But if you think there is a possibility of using Final Cut or Compressor sometime in the future, then if you have the choice I would try to get a machine of that vintagge or later.

Ok cool, what about internal specs? Like should I go for 8gb ram or would 16gb be 'needed'? GHz? Storage space? Any websites where I could get good, used, cheaper MPBs with some kind of warranty?

With 64 bit software, the more RAM the better. If you but one that you can add RAM, it would be an inexpensive upgrade. (Of course, some of the recent models are not upgradable.)

I can't really recommend a vendor for used products, because I don't have any first hand experience. Id be leery of buying off of EBay, The products in the Apple refurb store are discounted somewhat and are like new.

Again, the hardware forums are worth a visit.

    Good luck.
