Q: Drum Kit Designer additional samples

The kits and features (bleed, ambiance etc) within Drum Designer sound much better than the old kits in previous versions of Logic. However, in the past I have programmed drum tracks using EXS24 which used multiple snare, hi hat and cymbal samples eg. open, closed, half open, choked, foot closed, foot stamped to open hi hats etc multiple cymbals with effects such as choked crashes, ride cymbal bell etc and snares with rim shots, flam etc. Is it possible to include these in drum kit designer or create some of the kit designer effects (ie bleed etc) some other way.map

I want more than just a basic 5 piece kit with limited percussion- it doesnt have to be Terry Bozzio's kit just a bit more extensive the standard. Any ideas?

    Hi

I presume that you want to use these EXS kits with Drummer Tracks?

If yes, you could do that now by swapping out the DrumKit Designer plug for EXS plug

Alternatively, you could want to make your own DrumKitDesigner kits?

These ar much more complicated, and whilst in principle you could make them in the EXS Editor, or better, with the now defunct KeyMap software, there does not seem to be a way to load them into DKD. Note that the Bleed etc is all provided by samples of those DKD drums.

    Hi CCT,

Thanks for the reply and sorry to have taken so long to respond. I didn't mean to appear to be ignoring your help.

I wasn't really thinking about using the EXS24 kits on drummer tracks as I use the multiple samples specifically to program certain feels and Drummer tracks wouldn't know when to use each of the hi hat samples. Although, I suppose I could let drummer create a feel, convert this to a midi track and then manually assign notes to the right samples but it would be a bit long winded.

I was thinking more of about your second point of making my own DKD kits or using the DKD kits with manual midi input. However, your final sentence really answered the question that was in my mind but I hadn't explained very well. The fact that the bleed and room mics etc are actually samples rather than effects like an IR that could be used on any sample means that what I was thinking about can't be done.

Since reading your reply, I've spent a bit of time trying to get my head round drummer tracks and DKD kits to let me manipulate grooves using the workflow of

1 - manipulate kit settings, tuning etc and mix within DKD

2- create drummer region that is pretty close to what I want

3 - drag to mid region and edit

However, I can't seem to figure it out. I am obviously missing something really obvious but I just don't know what it is.

At the moment I have a feel looping on a drummer track which I like. It has some closed, open, half open and snatched open to foot-closed hi hats happening. I understand that each sample is multi-layered so some of the variation is created simply by velocity variations triggering different samples.

However, I have two open hi hats on adjacent beats where one is a long open and the other is a clipped short open (I have the same issue in other patterns with open to foot-closed). Both as A#1, velocity 111, and length/info 001 1 - but they sound different. In actually fact the first hi hat had length/info of 001 233 initially . Since this seemed to be the only difference I changed the data to 001 1 but the sound remained the same. What is actually causing the different effect? I am sure it is related to the "Automatic" hi hat option in the details tab of DKD but I can't see the midi data to manipulate it manually. If I can figure that out I should be able to program the exact feels I want within DKD.

In the list editor I have all buttons engaged (Notes, Prog Change, Pitch Bend etc ) but there doesn't seem to be any other info that I can edit. The is a note in the patter on A0 with velocity of 0 which is how I would normally choke an open hat or cymbal but this is before the beat and deleting it doesn't seem to help either.

Is there other controller info or something that is hidden? If so, how to I view this?

    Cheers

    Hi

Depending on your viewpoint, Drummer does some really clever things...

    All should be explained here

Thanks. I thought there must be something strange happening in the background but couldn't figure it out. I'll need to take some time to get my head round how to create the specific parts I want in future but that is certainly information I needed. Thanks again
