Just recently my password prompt window has started showing the missing character symbol, shown below.
I have validated all fonts and removed duplicates and problem fonts. Any idea on how to fix this?

You may consider reinstalling the OS if this happens in other users as well.

Have you tried "Restoring Standard Fonts..." in Font Book? I remember reading on these forums that selecting this option fixed a similar issue. I apologize as I've not been able to find a link to it.

I did see that option but I didn't try it because I have loads of custom fonts.
However, that DID fix the issue. And it just put all of the extra fonts into a new folder so I haven't lost them all.
