I installed Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac and my monitor keeps going to sleep while I am using it. I need to push the power button to turn it back on. And sometimes I have to hold the power button down to restart it and reboot the machine. Any idea how to fix this?

Same issue here. Since the upgrade to Yosemite 10.10, the display on my 27" mid 2011 imac (iMac 12,2) goes to sleep with no apparent reason (at least for me). Everything else is still working fine, it's just the display that goes black. No amount of typing, clicking, ssh-ing, or even screen sharing wakes the display. Putting the imac to sleep (with the power button or thru remote desktop) and waking it (by mouse or keyboard) brings back the display... for five seconds or so. Even a reboot / power cycle doesn't seem change this behaviour - only a reset of PRAM/NVRAM (hold Alt-Cmd P R during reboot) seems to cure it for a couple of days (sleep/wake cycles?) or so.
I re-installed Yosemite 10.10 (over the existing installation), but that didn't help either. I didn't see this behaviour under Mavericks nor Yosemite 10.0.
I'd be curious to see if you have some of the same things happening as me, can you open Console in your Utilities and keep an eye on the time when your Mac blacks out and the messages the Console logs give you? Hopefully they are similar to mine.

So it might have something to do with those items. I just know we aren't the only ones that it is affecting! It is really random, too. Sometimes it happens four times in a row and just touching the power button will wake it up. Other times i will have to completely restart, which sometimes the screen goes right to black after the chime, and i dont see the Apple logo yet. Zapping the PRAM brings it back for a while.
Yeah, I see similar messages in the syslog, but I'm afraid they don't mean much to me. I see them also when the system goes into regular sleep.
I'm starting to think it's a hardware-related problem after all, the upgrade to Yosemite 10.10.1 just being a "lucky" coincidence. Getting sick of the issue, I wiped the hard disk and did a clean install of Mavericks (10.9.5). Guess what: the problem still occurs: the display goes to sleep randomly while the rest of the system continues working happily. Screen sharing still works, a secondary display also still works. It looks like the OS doesn't realise the display has gone to sleep, so it doesn't wake it. That is, until it knows the display sleeps, e.g. by moving the mouse into a hot corner or by pressing the power button or by pressing Ctrl-Shift-Eject.
I found some old threads suggesting this could be a thermal issue, caused by dust clogging the air vents or a faulty graphics heat sink. The hardware turns off the display to prevent damage from overheating. As that would explain the random behaviour, I installed Hardware Monitor to test this. In more or less idle state, the graphics processor temperature diode and heat sink are below 60º C and 50º C respectively. They seem to be considerably higher (up to 90º C for the diode) when the display goes to sleep, but I've yet to find exactly which sensor and threshold trigger this. Looks like I'll be planing a trip to the repair shop...
I had to drop $800 right before Christmas to get it repaired. $600 for a new monitor display, and the rest for labor. Ugh. Worst time of the year for that to happen, too. So far so good, though. Let's see if it starts acting up again in a few months. I had it replaced in July, and it started up again in October. If it does it again, we'll know it's internal hardware that might be the problem. Are you still having issues?
The jury is still out. I brought the iMac to the Apple store, after having found a graphics card replacement programme (see http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203787). They were quite helpful, but found nothing wrong with the graphics card. They did find something wrong with system memory (I installed 4x 4GB Kingston modules in 2011), and they claimed that that was the cause. While they were quite helpful, they did complain about the SSD I had installed last April, indicating that they probably wouldn't replace a faulty graphics card because of that unsupported change. They didn't charge me anything, though.
Using Apple Hardware Test (boot with Cmd-D) repeatedly with different memory modules installed, I found the defective module (and even got a refund from the supplier). However, even with the factory installed 2x 2GB memory modules, the problem still occurs (but seemingly less frequently?). So I called MacRepair, the shop that installed the SSD for me. On the phone they were quite optimistic, stating that this was a well-known issue with the 2011 27" inch model and that it could very well be a somewhat loose cable connection as a result of the SDD installation. So I brought the iMac to them for investigation, but they were very busy because of the holiday season. I'm expecting to hear back from them this week.
Not sure if the display is the issue, however. When I connect my MacBook Pro over thunderbolt, wait for the screen to of blank, and then switch the iMac into external display mode (Cmd-F2), it seems to work fine. After switching back and reviving the screen, it blanks again (at some irregular interval). I didn't test this extensively, though.
