Did you check to see if the mute button is on?

reset all settings, settings, general, reset option at the bottom of general, reset all settings, And no you will not lose your information, if issue persist backup and restore your device as new and if that doesn't work, time for a replacement.

So you just see the speaker and nothing written under it? Do you see the volume bar? If not, then you are going to have to restore the device to see if that will help. Considering the age of the device, it may not work. If that does not restore the volume, you will have to make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider. This happened to my iPhone 4 a long time back. It was a hardware issue.

If you are uncomfortable following these steps you might want to contact Apple 1-800-MY-APPl or setup appointment at the Apple store but do a backup before you head out to the store because they more then likely to restore your device which will Erase all your contents and settings.

If the word ringer is appearing and you see the volume bar, are you getting sounds? If not, try going to Settings>General>Accessibility>Assistive Touch. Turn that on, then tap on the button, and go to Device. From there, see if you see a mute button. If you do, for the sound to work, there needs to be a line through the bell and the word Mute there. Doesn't sound right, but it is. See if that helps. That is the only other solution that I would be aware of besides the trip to the Apple Store I recommended earlier.
