connecting a dualshock 3 to OSX yosemite

I am using a MacBook Pro running OSX Yosemite version 10.10.1.

On previous versions I was able to connect my PS3 controller (DualShock 3) to my MacBook via bluetooth. However, the bluetooth menu has changed and I can no longer figure out how to get it to connect. I've been googling my issue for about a week but all I can find are tutorials on the older OS, nothing that will show me how to connect it with the current Yosemite OS. I've been messing with my bluetooth menu trying to figure out what to do but I'm stumped.

Any help?

I stand corrected. Wireless does work. For connecting, you do it like the original tutorials tell you (reset the controller with a pin, connect via USB, hold PS button for three seconds, then disconnect).

Only minor difference is that no lights will indicate that it may be connected. In that case, check your Bluetooth Menu via the menu bar (not from a separate Bluetooth Menu window mind you) and see if it connects.

This is more trial and error so I can't guarantee success but worked for me and a few games I played.

So to document this fully, here's the behavior I saw, using 10.10.4:

1) connect controller to PC, lights will flash slowly indicating (I think) charging. No info in Bluetooth menu about controller

2) disconnect controller, lights will all be off

3) press 'ps' button on controller, all lights will flash quickly, 'Bluetooth Settings' menu will show no evidence of the controller, and it never will.

4) the top menubar bluetooth icon will show a connected device, and if you click you'll see PLAYSTATION(R) Controller with only a 'disconnect' option

5) the controller is now working, which you can test if you start up a game (I didn't find a good freeware option so I recommend buying Nuclear Throne ASAP 😝 )

6) you can use the 'disconnect' option from the top menu bar to turn off your controller, not doing so will drain its battery! Also all 4 controller lights will blink rapidly whenever the thing is connected.
