No. You can't shutdown the computer nor allow it to go to sleep while downloading software from anywhere. Computers are like cars. They don't do anything unless you turn them on.
You cannot download to a shutdown computer, but if you must stop the download, click the Pause button near the download progress bar and then restart the download after you power up again.
Shutting down your computer while it is in a write operation (downloading, TimeMachine backups, etc) can result in damaged files, and storage devices. Wait for things to complete, then shutdown normally. If it is going to be a long download, visit System Preferences > Energy Saver and set computer and display sleep to never, and uncheck Put hard disks to sleep when possible. Put these back to their prior settings when the download is done.
Do you recommend OSX yosemite?
Yes
Two computers here have no problem with Yosemite.
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

I like Yosemite, works great, faster than Mavericks. I have it installed on an Early 2011 MacBook Pro and Mid-2011 iMac. Both machines run faster than with Mavericks and no issues.
After installing, be sure to open Disk Utility, select the drive it is installed on and then Repair Permissions. The installer makes a mess of the permissions for the printers and libraries and a few other items. If you get a lot of permission errors, run it again, and then restart the computer so all things are clean.
