what does connection logging enabled mean; previous answers did not do the job

My Mail icon just wound not work when i clicked on it. Opened up in safe boot mode and it fixed itself. But then 'connection logging enabled' appeared on the Mail tool bar. Mail works okay, but what does this the strange sentence mean? There are 2 questions in Apple, but the answers don't answer the question. I use Mavericks, and my macbook pro is mid-2010.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6)

Connection logging enabled means that you can look at the logs. To turn it off, go to Window, then Connection Doctor, and uncheck the box.

"While the Activity window provides a real-time look at what's occurring as you send or receive mail, the Mail logs go one step further and keep a record of each event. Since the Activity window is real-time, if you glance away or even blink, you may miss seeing a connection issue. The Mail logs, on the other hand, keep a record of the connection process that you can review at your leisure."
