My imac running SL 10.6.8 occassionally switches on when it is left in sleep mode.
Am I being hacked?
Is there any way of tracking cause of this anomaly? i.e. activity monitor.
Has this happened to others, what did you do?
Am I just being paranoid?
If nothing else it would be nice to know what may be causing this. Thanks.

System Prefereces - Energy Saver - look to see if the Wake for network Access box is checked. If it is, uncheck it.
For testing, disconnect andy USB devices other than the keyboard and mouse. Some older USB implementations in peripheral devices can cause odd wake-from-sleep events.
Older multi-function printers with FAX capability were notorious for this.
Do you have a Time Machine backup configured? The 2008 iMac is too old to support Power Nap though - OS X: About Power Nap - Apple Support.

I suspect it probably is a USB device which has not fully shut down.
Normally though imac switches on immediately when commanded to sleep and printer still shutting down.
I do not have a FAX, only printer & WD HD's & belkin USB hub.

1. Can you remove the Belkin Hub and test your sleep/wake?
2. Do you have any third-party TM tools installed?
3. Can you check Applications -> Utilities -> Console for any log entries for sleep/wake messages?
