Q: iPhone 6 internet problems (not just WiFi)

Hi guys, I just got a new iPhone 6 (64 GB) two days ago and have been loving it so far. However a problem has come up that prevents me from using my iPhone normally.

Every few hours or so when I try to use the iPhone, it can't connect to the internet. It has no problem connecting to the Wifi network but there is no internet connection. I realize this is a relatively common problem on iOS 8 but things get a little weirder.

When I disable my wifi to try to connect to the internet via LTE, the phone still has no internet connection. Once it loses the connection to the internet over wifi it loses connection to the internet via cellular data as well. I can still send text messages and send/receive calls.

The only way to get it start working again is to reboot the device. I've tried resetting networking data and disabling WiFi Networking as suggested by a bunch of sources but it does not help.

I'm thinking it might be a problem with my router as its been a little problematic in the past 2 weeks. My mom, who got her iPhone 6 (16 GB) on release day has the same problem but her problem started before I got my phone. My dad, who got the same phone on the same day as my mom, does not have this problem.

Just to clarify, when my phone is connected to my home network but cannot connect to the internet, I can connect to the internet on my other devices (iPad, laptop, game consoles) perfectly fine. And my mom and I do not always lose internet connection at the same time.

So far this has only happened when my phone is coming off of sleep. But I have not used it for an extended amount of time so I can't say with certainty it won't happen while I'm using it.

The wifi bar (or cone, whatever that shape is) is at full 3 bars 99% of the time I'm in my room. However, since the first time I got this phone the bar has been flashing from full to 1 bar to LTE back to full within a period of 1 sec every minute or so. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Can anyone tell me what might be the problem and how I can try to fix it? Thanks in advance!

I have the same issue with 8.1.3. The only way is to reboot the device. It's actually getting really annoying. Did anyone figure out what the problem is?

I am having the same problem. 128 gb gold 6+ running V 8.1.3 Works fine at home or wherever on wifi, then if I go out somewhere and have to connect to a 3g/4g network it won't connect. Closing every app, turning off wifi, turning off cellular data, then turning back on again sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. It's only two months old and was fine for the first month. It's been restored and it didn't help either. Was over it after a couple of days of doing the reset thing.

    Hi,

I have posted a series of what I tried and how it went in another thread: Contstantly have to reboot iphone 6 to obtain data connection

Bottom line, I had to take my iPhone to Apple when I was suffering from the problem, and I got a replacement. So far, it's working fine.

My phone (that got replaced) was a space gray, 128GB iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.3 by the way.

    Good luck...

Nope, problem still there with the new iPhone as well. I think the issue happens when the phone is kept inactive (during the night for instance) for a long time, so that the phone goes to sleep. Coming out of sleep, somehow internet connection can not be restored. I suspect there is a low battery effect as well. When the battery is low and/or the phone is inactive for a long time, the problem gets triggered. At least, that's what I suspect.

BTW, I've got 128GB space gray iPhone 6, iOS 8.1.3.

Wishing all the best for everyone...

i appreciate the insight about it happening when the phone power is drained. even though i have run into this very problem. i have an iphone 5s. and the problem rarely happens, but i usually stay above 50% charged. i need to pay attention to when i get below 40% and see if the power drop correlates to the internet drop.

Anyone updated to iOS 8.2 yet and seen any improvement regarding this annoying issue?

I am also facing the problem. Has any one contacted Apple Support?

The problem is happening so rarely for me that it's almost nonexistent actually. The last time it occurred was around my former post. I suppose it is something router related, hope it goes away with 8.2 .

I Have had the same problem with iphone6+ on iOS 8.0-8.2. I used to have to reboot phone all the time.  Checked routers, checked settings, checked it all.  I'm in IT/network security so I'm not new with troubleshooting issues.   I noticed when I havnt gotten any new push emails the issue is back.  What I try first is to kill any open apps. (Double push home button (not tap for reachability)).  Once all apps are closed it normally comes back.  Dosnt look like it's just a single app cause.  Looks like anything with a stale connection will kill the Internet.  But it is definitely software.  Not hardware.   Could be a ram leak, driver issue, firmware, or Internet api call that bad.  like I said, seems an app that used the Internet and has a stale (sleep) connection kills the entire stack.

in any event.  If anyone can find any other correlations, add them here.  Hopefully 8.3 takes care of it.   It's definitely not unique.

Thanks for the troubleshooting!  Your assessment fits my situation perfectly, it's good to have a pro working on this.  I've been posting on another thread that's discussing this issue. Like you, my problem continued with 8.2 and was not related to router/settings/hardware (replaced the phone in the middle of all this).

I was able to identify and replicate one trigger for the bug.  For me it was an obsolete email app (Secure Gmail, Apps Gone Bananas).  I use 2 different email apps to segregate my accounts, if an email was pushed to Secure Gmail when the phone was in sleep mode for some time (>2hrs?, it generally happened overnight) then all subsequent connectivity was lost until reboot. I deleted Secure Gmail and replaced it with a current app (CloudMagic), and so far so good.  I did have one more freeze that may correlate with Hotspot VPN, but I haven't replicated it yet.

Have you submitted your assessment to Apple? (https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html)  Apparently they don't read these discussions but they do read the feedback and bug reports.  Thanks again!!

I am having the same issue with the internet.

Connection is fine, if a bit spotty on the WiFi. However, the moment I leave the WiFi connection, I can't load anything.

I have full bars of service, 3G coverage, and I also tried in town with 4G coverage as well. No dice.

However, I can still text and send/receive phone calls.

Rebooting does nothing. I have rebooted this phone a dozen times and nothing changed at all.

Using version 8.1.2 and 128GB Iphone. Had it less than a month.

same here internet failed both lte/wifi nothing to do with router and actually it's ios8 problem because ios6 is working fine (i skipped ios7)

i think it's notification related because right after i got notification (which should mean internet is fine) and try to open notification which enter application but it will stuck at loading (which mean internet is already failed)

hope this step to reproduce help Apple engineer figure this out somehow (finger cross)

    Hi,

Rebooting always sorted out loss of internet in my case. Your issue seems to be somewhat different than what we have been discussing so far. I suggest you take it to Apple Store when the issue happens.
