Q: iPhone 6 internet problems (not just WiFi)

Hi guys, I just got a new iPhone 6 (64 GB) two days ago and have been loving it so far. However a problem has come up that prevents me from using my iPhone normally.

Every few hours or so when I try to use the iPhone, it can't connect to the internet. It has no problem connecting to the Wifi network but there is no internet connection. I realize this is a relatively common problem on iOS 8 but things get a little weirder.

When I disable my wifi to try to connect to the internet via LTE, the phone still has no internet connection. Once it loses the connection to the internet over wifi it loses connection to the internet via cellular data as well. I can still send text messages and send/receive calls.

The only way to get it start working again is to reboot the device. I've tried resetting networking data and disabling WiFi Networking as suggested by a bunch of sources but it does not help.

I'm thinking it might be a problem with my router as its been a little problematic in the past 2 weeks. My mom, who got her iPhone 6 (16 GB) on release day has the same problem but her problem started before I got my phone. My dad, who got the same phone on the same day as my mom, does not have this problem.

Just to clarify, when my phone is connected to my home network but cannot connect to the internet, I can connect to the internet on my other devices (iPad, laptop, game consoles) perfectly fine. And my mom and I do not always lose internet connection at the same time.

So far this has only happened when my phone is coming off of sleep. But I have not used it for an extended amount of time so I can't say with certainty it won't happen while I'm using it.

The wifi bar (or cone, whatever that shape is) is at full 3 bars 99% of the time I'm in my room. However, since the first time I got this phone the bar has been flashing from full to 1 bar to LTE back to full within a period of 1 sec every minute or so. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Can anyone tell me what might be the problem and how I can try to fix it? Thanks in advance!

I was able to identify and replicate one trigger for the bug.  For me it was an obsolete email app (Secure Gmail, Apps Gone Bananas).  I use 2 different email apps to segregate my accounts, if an email was pushed to Secure Gmail when the phone was in sleep mode for some time (>2hrs?, it generally happened overnight) then all subsequent connectivity was lost until reboot. I deleted Secure Gmail and replaced it with a current app (CloudMagic), and so far so good.  I did have one more freeze that may correlate with Hotspot VPN, but I haven't replicated it yet.

Originally, I had added an enterprise Exchange account to my phone with ActiveSync enabled (as well as an Outlook.com account), and almost regularly every 4 or 5 days my phone would lose all data (although it was never apparent until I tried to open a web page or check email).

I've experienced this bug since iOS 8 was released on my iPhone 5S.  I had tried everything others have mentioned in the thread, including wiping settings and resetting everything to default (with no restore) and nothing worked.  I also have a colleague who had the same problem as well (he's on Sprint, I'm on Verizon).

What ended up "solving" the issue for me (and my colleague) was turning off push email for all of my accounts (except for iCloud - I left it on push).  After I did that, my phone would not reboot like it had before and hasn't since January.  However, a month or so ago I got curious to see if the newer version of iOS fixed the issue so I re-enabled the push email...and sure enough the problem came right back.  I've reported what I've found to Apple, but that was over 4 months ago.

YMMV, but that's what "fixed" it for me.  Whether there's an issue on the stack's end or maybe in some background process, I'm not sure.  There's definitely an issue here though that hasn't been truly resolved.

Just bought iPhone 6 with iOS 8.3. Same problem - no mail or Internet without wifi, even on 4G. Does anybody know if Apple are working on this?

Got my iPhone 6 in early March, began having this issue 3 wks ago - shows a cellular signal (Sprint 3G or LTE), but no data will come through. This began happening before I updated to 8.3, I thought the update would fix it. Not so. Works fine on wifi, phone call are fine. Initially doing a reset would make it work for a short time, also doing a carrier update it would work for a short time. I've been to the Genius Bar, they recommended replacing the phone. I did. Same problem. A Genius Bar employee thought perhaps the issue was with the software back-up (I restored from the cloud when I got the replacement phone), so I started from scratch - did not restore from the cloud. Same problem. I have yet to get back to the Apple store. Saw a comment somewhere that mentioned they thought the issue was when the phone would transition from 3G to LTE networks, and vice versa. I have had luck restoring the cellular data connection by turning airplane mode on and then off again, but as soon as I leave wherever I'm at (ie, leave work to go home) the connection will be gone again.  And that trick hasn't worked today at all.

Finally resolved my problem--it was on my sprint account! I went to sprint corporate store (not one of the ones run by another company), they took service off my phone then switched it back on. It works!

I just recently got my iPhone 6 (about a week and a half ago) and just started having these same problems yesterday. I've tried resetting my phone as well as settings and iCloud and nothing helps. It doesn't occur over a few hours either, it happens every time I reset the phone. It works for a minute or so and then goes out again. Clearly the new software does not provide a fix for this problem. Has anyone found something new to help with this problem?

Same problem exactly if I reboot its fine for a few hours.

I'm about ready to dump Apple.

This has been going on for over a year and whenever I take the phone in they can not figure it out and have not been helpful at all

Here is what fixed my iPhone:  General > VPN > > turn off Connect on Demand

The VPN caused the same problems everyone described above.

    Hope this helps.

I don't know if this has been said already, I apologize if it's already been suggeste, but I had the exact same problem and it was really ******* me off in the extreme. After reading this thread it occurred to me to try shutting off the LTE function in the cellular section of setting. Since I've done that I havent had the "cannot connect to the Internet" issue after coming off of a wifi network.

Whether that's actually the problem, or it's just coincidental, it completely work for me and it seems like there are hundreds of other people out there with the same problem so I thought I would let you guys know what helped me out.

hopefully it will work for some of you.

As an aside, does anybody know what exactly the LTE network is all about? Is it just supposed to be faster?

Go to Settings ---> Wi-fi---> and then select option Ask to join networks. You cna switch that OFF, so that this pop-up does not come.

    Thanks,

I just woke up this morning with no internet access. My iphone 6s 64GB A1688 IOS 9.3.4 was joined the wifi network just like last night but no internet access this morning. I began to search the cause of the problem. What I did for whole day to fix?

My current home network: a router TP-Link Archer D5 V1 and a bridge Zyxel P-660HN connected to that router via ethernet. There is no problem connecting and accessing internet via LTE.

First, I checked the router's status, everything seems fine. Diagnostics: all pass. Internet access quality: Very Good. I have wifi 2.4 and wifi 5 both are joinable but still no internet connection on my iphone. My iphone even didint have internet access on bridge wifi network. I began testing other laptop, tablet and android phones to connect these wifi networks, all these devices worked fine on both wifi networks and even bridge wifi network. So this means router and bridge was working fine.

What I did next on iphone respectively:

wifi on-off and rejoin: problem continues

    iphone restart: problem continues

router and bridge restart: problem continues

Forget and rejoin to all 3 networks: problem continues

Changed SSID names and passwords for 3 networks: problem continues

Enabled Guest network option for 2.4 and 5 on router and joined these networks: had internet access for each

(now I have 5 networks in home total)

Tried connect again back to normal 2.4 and 5 and bridge: problem continues

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings: Didin't work.

Reseted router and bridge and installed from the begining gave different SSIDs and passwords: problem continues

Tried to join my neighbour's wifi: Had internet connection

Made hotspot from another android phone and made join my iphone to that hotspot wifi: Had internet connection

Called my ISP and Tp-link technical dept. to check every setting are nominal and the settings was ok: problem continues... They just told me stereotyped things, you know... Switch off router, switch on router again... Bla bla...

Called Apple Care they tried to fix for 1,30 hrs: problem continues

What we did with apple care? They simply took activity log from my iphone. and then began the procedure of resetting device with all data. We backed up the all data into my pc and resetted iphone from itunes on pc with redowloading IOS 9.3.4. After resetting I follow the instructions like a new iphone and tried to connect to existing wifi networks: problem continues!!! They invited to bring the iphone to apple service.

Resetted router and installed settings from the begining again and made new wifi networks (SSID and pass): problem continues

Switched off the bridge and began setting up router settings this time with searching on the internet every feature that what are all these features for one by one and didint change such major thing on router's interface. Got make sure the router's time and date. Did these instructions carrefully step by step what this link says:Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support Deleted all visible devices in ARP List and made 'unload' to 'loaded' my pc MAC&IP addresses. Disabled guest networks. Setup new wifis with shorter SSIDs and very shorter passwords. Then I realized surprisingly that my iphone had internet access! Bridge was still switched off and still didint restore my backup on iphone. Then curiously began restoring my backup to iphone via itunes(pc), I still have the internet access! Nothing problematic FOR NOW! I switched on the bridge again. Still have internet access! Just for now... We sill see what will happen following days... I ll post updates if something occurs.

I still dont know what was the exact problem is because I did all these things spontaneous. So my opinion is, the problem occured by conflicting same IP address with other connected devices and my iphone given by router and bridge's DHCP. Or maybe different DHCPs gave different IPs for same device which is my iphone?! I don't know... But it works for now after having hrs of headache...

Sorry guys, I cant give you the exact solution. I just wanted to share my experience that it may help for someone. And also I apologize for my bad explanation. Stay fixed

    Best,
